Following years of preparation, Elko’s California Trail Historic Interpretive Center, eight miles west of town at Interstate 80’s exit 292, is set for a June 2 grand opening. The center aims to interpret the legacy of the greatest human migration in the country’s history, when hundreds of thousands of emigrants surged west in the mid- to late-19th century in pursuit of the American Dream. Their route along the California Trail crossed present-day Northern Nevada along the Humboldt River, and portions of it—some just steps away from the 16,000-square-foot center—are still visible and navigable today.
In addition to literally walking in the steps of the pioneers, visitors to the center can learn about the trail and those who traveled it via interactive displays, multimedia exhibits, full-scale dioramas, and original art. An artistic representation of the trail adorns an open-air plaza that hosts events such as the annual California Trail Days, held June 2-3 to coincide with the grand opening. californiatrailcenter.org, elkotraildays.com, 775-738-1849
About an hour east of Elko on Interstate 80, the Wells Chamber of Commerce and Trail of the 49ers Interpretive Center offers more perspective on the historic trail with artifacts, interactive displays, and access to historic California Trail sites. trailofthe49ers.org, 775-752-3540
