My Nevada adventure is a work in progress. Typically, we drive round trip from Las Vegas to Reno to visit family or catch a UNLV-UNR game. However, in 2013, I made a bucket list and it specifically includes to do something unique or unusual in every county in Nevada. Since there are a manageable 16, it's realistic to hit every one, even though it's a large state. With my mother-in-law, aka my partner in crime, we hit the road! She was the perfect companion for this journey, as she has taken me to several museums in Northern Nevada in the past. I loved the history and at one particular museum, where she showed me an old-fashioned milk churn where cream rose to the top that she used when she grew up on a ranch in Yerington in the 40s and 50s.
I really enjoyed exploring Virginia City! We got to immerse ourselves in the history, which included the Mark Twain building, the rock with all the Nevada mining materials, the beautiful Saint Mary's on the Mountain Church with its Mad Monk Wine Cellar! I also loved spending time in Ely, home to my father-in-law's family in northeastern Nevada. Their Northern Nevada Railway Polar Express Train is entertaining and the cemetery is fascinating, especially the Chinese tombstones.
There are so many things I still want to check off, like touring the Lehman caves at Great Basin, doing a night sky tour in Tonopah and staying at the Mizpah and driving through the rugged and wide-open territory of central Nevada (with plenty of gas and snacks!) I would love to go dog-sledding in Reno-Tahoe, hike in Lamoille Canyon and dive into some of the small-town, big-fun festivals like Goldfield Days.
I live in Las Vegas and there is so much to do beyond the Strip and Downtown that visitors don't see. Some of my favorites are the Springs Preserve, the Clark County Wetlands, and the Mob Museum! I absolutely love touring the Spring Mountain Ranch while taking in some stunning views of Red Rock Canyon.
There's plenty of fun and adventures in Nevada - an incredible state filled with amazing people and stories. Enjoy it!
