Cave Lake State Park competes in Nature’s Waterpark Showdown
Cave Lake State Park near Ely is running neck and neck against another Western lake in a social media contest, Nature’s Waterpark Showdown, running through July.
The contest is sponsored by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, and is part of the foundation’s Take Me Fishing ad campaign.
Dave Morrow, Nevada State Parks administrator and a fly fisherman, isn’t surprised that Cave Lake is a top contender.
“Most people who go there catch fish,” he said. “And in some cases, they catch big fish. I’ve caught some very nice fish there.”
People like Cave Lake for the good-sized brown trout they can fish there, Morrow said, as well as the beautiful scenery (Cave Lake is surrounded by the Schell Mountain range); the state park facilities, including campgrounds, that are found there; and its accessibility (it’s a short drive from Ely.)
For those considering Cave Lake for fishing, Morrow has a tip.
“It’s very easy to talk to the park ranger and ask what (the fish) are biting on,” he said. “It changes all the time.”
