Mark Twain’s Legacy Lives on during Zephyr Cove Resort’s Wild West Weekend

Mark Twain Wild West Weekend at Zephyr Cove Resort will stir up the summer season at Lake Tahoe June 12-13 with a shootout, cowboy poetry, skits, contests and a “Kids Zone” — all to celebrate the famed author and humorist.

“This year marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Mark Twain, who significantly influenced the public's perception of Lake Tahoe as the jewel of the Sierra,” Austin Sass, director of sales and marketing, Zephyr Cove Resort and Lake Tahoe Cruises, said. “The Wild West Weekend will be a fun, family-friendly event that takes our guests back to the days of the American Old West, while preserving for younger generations the history of Mark Twain and early years of Lake Tahoe.”

Fun starts at 10 a.m. June 12 with a weekend-long line-up of family-friendly activities and exciting prizes at the Zephyr Cove Resort special events site beneath the tall pines on the lake shore. Activities are free for the public, except the Mark Twain Lecture Dinner and minimal contest entry fees. For more information, visit www.zephyrcove.com or call 866-761-6240.>

Popular Mark Twain impressionist McAvoy Layne, an event host, will judge the pie-eating contest. Tantalizing aromas of chili will stir appetites during the Chili Cook-off, and fibbers and other truth-stretchers will compete in Mark Twain's Wild West Bold-Faced Liars Contest.

The Mark Twain Lecture Dinner includes a four-course meal featuring dishes such as Duck Confit on Endive Leaf, Kobe Filet Mignon with Peppercorn Demi, Butter-Poached Maine Lobster, Lavender Crème Brulee and Ginger Tuille. Robert Stewart, author of Aurora, Nevada's Ghost City of Dawn, will describe Twain’s travels at Lake Tahoe and the possible designation of a Clemens Cove. Robert Hirst, general editor and official curator of the Mark Twain Project and Papers, will discuss the release of Twain's autobiography, withheld for 100 years. Event proceeds will benefit Mark Twain history preservation.

Various prizes include cash, cabin stays at Zephyr Cove Resort, snowmobile rides and cruises on the M.S. Dixie II. Zephyr Cove Resorts operator ARAMARK Parks and Destinations also runs the M.S. Dixie II and Tahoe Queen paddlewheeler boats, which will race on June 13. A kids' triathlon will wrap up the weekend festivities Sunday.
