Nevada Magazine announces winners in the 2009 Best of Nevada

The latest issue of Nevada Magazine has the winners of the 12th Annual Best of Nevada contest. If you haven’t picked up a copy, you can view the winners online and check them out yourself, as Nevada Magazine links to the websites of just about all of the winners.

LamoilleLamoille Canyon: Located just 20 miles from Elko, Lamoille Canyon offers outdoor recreation at its finest, with some spectacular scenery.Since we’re full steam ahead into Summer, it’s probably important that I point out a couple of the options that can make the season more fun. For instance, the Adventure Outing category features Lake Tahoe from the north, Red Rock Canyon from the south, and Lamoille Canyon in Rural Nevada. All three places offer some great hiking and picnicking opportunities, along with some spectacular views.

Nevada Northern Railway: You can catch steam trains and plenty of other rail cars. Photo by DB’s travels.
If you’re going to be spending a few days in Nevada and want a great place to take the kids, be sure to stop by the winners in that category, too. In northern Nevada, Wild Island was the winner. In southern Nevada, Springs Preserve got the nod. And in Rural Nevada, be sure to stop by the Northern Nevada Railway in Ely. Each place has a different appeal. Wild Island is a water park that reaches beyond just the slides. You can ride in go-carts, bowl a few frames, or try the two mini golf courses. Springs Preserve offers nature hikes, a lay area for kids, and some interesting learning opportunities built to suit kids of all ages. The Northern Nevada Railway is full of cool toys—they’re just life-sized steam engines and railroad cars. There is also a museum to take you through the history of the railroad in the area.

The timing couldn’t be better for setting you up for a nice time in Nevada this summer. Be sure to check out one of these spots while you’re in town, and let us know how much fun you had.
