Start the New Year with a hike at Spooner Lake

A fee-free hike at Lake Tahoe-Nevada State Park is set to run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 1 near Spooner Lake, a half-mile north of the junction of highways 50 and 28, on Highway 28. If it snows, the hike becomes a snowshoe outing.

Park entrance fees are waived for this event. If the Spooner Cross-Country Ski concession is in operation, vouchers will be made available for all participants to trade for trails passes and snowshoes will be available for rent.

The hike/snowshoe is billed as an easy two miles. Children are welcome, but no dogs. Participants should dress warm, bring a snack and water. In the event of severe weather, the hike may be cancelled, so check with Ranger Bill Champion, 775-220-3448 or bchampion25@hughes.net, for up-to-date information.

The Nevada Division of State Parks oversees the state’s 25 parks. Check them out to learn about recreational opportunities, amenities and more.
