Mountain bikers and runners, the challenge is on at Galena Fest, a Reno event that includes kids’ activities, live music and food trucks as well as the Bloody Rose Mountain Bike Climb and Wicked Thorn Trail Run. Set for Sept. 30 at Galena Creek Regional Park off Mount Rose Highway, Galena Fest raises money for new trail construction, trail maintenance and youth programs.
The Bloody Rose Mountain Bike Climb is a 12.2 mile course — a mix of single track, fire roads and pavement — that ascends to a 10,128-foot summit. Not for the fainthearted, the course has sections called Wall of Death and Funeral Hill, but that’s part of the draw.
“The Bloody Rose will eventually attract mountain bikers from across the country,” Richard Keillor, the event founder, said in a press release.
Runners can sign up for the Wicked Thorn Trail Run (7.25 miles) or the Fun Run (1.7 miles), both of which go through the Galena forest.
Other fun activities include a Big Fish Contest sponsored by the Nevada Department of Wildlife for those age 14 and younger; an expo with demonstrations, exhibits and information; live music from 7 Days Gone and Jelly Bread; food vendors and more.
