A Halloween festival and a Civil War reenactment both are scheduled for October at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park in Blue Diamond.
The park, just west of Las Vegas and within the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, will have its Halloween Spooktacular from 2 to 5 p.m. Oct. 20. Snacks, prizes and arts-and-crafts time will be followed by a haunted hike through the historical area. The event is free, but the park entrance fee is $9, $7 Nevada residents.
Civil War Days, in which more than 300 people will reenact Civil War battles, takes place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 27 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 28. There also will be a Civil War fashion show, a ladies’ tea, a period-style church service, soldier encampments and field hospitals. Tickets cost $5, $3 youth ages 6-7. Bring two non-perishable food items and receive a $1 discount on an adult ticket. Park entrance fees apply.
Spring Mountain Ranch State Park once was the home of Paiute Indians, mountain men and early settlers to the area. The 520-acre site eventually became a working ranch/retreat with a string of famous owners, including millionaire Howard Hughes.
