They say that life at North Lake Tahoe moves a little slower, and while that’s not untrue, it doesn’t mean there’s any shortage of things to do. With 11 towns and resorts on the northern side of stunning blue Lake Tahoe, visitors can stay as active as they want. Take winter, for example. There are no fewer than 12 magnificent alpine resorts, like Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley USA, Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe, Diamond Peak and Northstar-at-Tahoe, anchoring the north shore, meaning skiers and snowboarders have their choice of leisurely beginner runs fit for the whole family or experts-only terrain parks tucked in the trees. As a whole, the north shore ski resorts, which make up the country’s largest concentration of ski resorts, enjoy an average annual snowfall of between 300 and 500 powdery inches.
In the summer, the choices are just as limitless. From stellar mountain biking runs and lazy outdoor movies at Northstar to roller skating and swimming at Squaw, the question of just how active you want to be is entirely up to you. For the adventurous and competitive spirit, there’s the annual Northstar Tour de Nez, one of the most popular cycling events in the country. And this year, Tahoe is hosting the biggest sporting event since the 1960 Olympics in a classic example of a venue as grand as the event. Beyond the annual and special events, which run the gamut from food and wine to theatre to art and of course, sports, North Lake Tahoe has the crystal clear water of the lake itself. The sandy beaches and pure alpine water beckon sun worshippers. Boating, snorkeling, and kayaking are just a few of the fun water sports to enjoy.
After the water and sun, the north shore offers another version of fun. Crystal Bay is home to four grand casinos including the Cal-Neva Resort, where the California-Nevada border goes right through the swimming pool. Moving along to the exclusive town of Incline Village, visitors will find some of the most incredible homes at Lake Tahoe and a few of its most stunning private beaches. For visitors, there’s nearby Kings Beach, home to craft fairs, friendly shops, divine restaurants, and of course, lovely beaches. In Tahoe Vista, there are beautiful hidden beaches, access to endless water activities, trailheads for mountain pursuits, and plenty of lodging options. A visit to Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park is sure to please with yet more amazing beaches, picnic areas and the annual Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival with its performances set against the unmatched backdrop of pristine Lake Tahoe.
For boat lovers, there’s Carnelian Bay and the annual Concours d’ Elegance, the premier wooden boat show in the country. History buffs and outdoor enthusiasts will love Tahoe City and the historic Lake Tahoe dam, various farmers’ markets, camping on the beach, fantastic hiking, mountain biking and more. And the adventure enthusiast will thrive in Tahoe’s backcountry hiking along the Tahoe Rim Trail and Flume Trail. All over North Lake Tahoe, regardless of the season, visitors will find exhilarating, relaxing, inspiring events, activities and opportunities. And the pace of it all is up to you.
