The pretty town of Minden, the Douglas County seat, is a quiet, friendly community set in the heart of the Carson Valley. Minden began as a planned community, and is in fact unique among Silver State towns and possibly even the nation, as it was mapped and defined on the ground before a single building was built.
The town was established by the Dangberg family and named after a city near the patriarch’s birthplace in Germany, and although newer subdivisions have affected the town’s symmetry, charm and pride are still evident. Visitors strolling through Minden today will pass stately century-old homes and historic brick buildings designed by noted Nevada architect, Frederick Delongchamps. There’s a nice selection of local restaurants, antique stores, gift shops and art galleries to peruse. Be sure to pick up a walking tour brochure at the town office, located in the CVIC Hall.
Also in town, Minden Park is a lovely spot to lunch, home to the bandstand/gazebo that hosts monthly concerts during the summer months. The scenery around town is picturesque as well, with the majestic Job’s Peak, possibly the most photographed mountain in the entire Carson range of the Sierra Nevada, visible from nearly any vantage point.
In town, there are annual street fairs hosted throughout the year, with local and traveling artists, a range of interesting vendors, food booths and live music. Summer months mean farmers’ markets, and there’s the annual lighting of the historic Minden Gazebo to kick off the holiday season.
Minden also serves as an ideal base for outdoor recreation. Not only is it close to the playground that is Lake Tahoe, there’s no shortage of golf, biking and hiking in the area. Four of the Divine Nine golf courses are just minutes away, hikers and horseback riders can follow the Faye-Luther Canyon Trail that begins just off State Route 206, and bikers routinely race along Foothill and Jacks Valley roads. After a day of outdoor activity, you can relax at the Carson Valley Inn, have dinner at Barone and Reed in downtown or choose from a number of American, Asian, Mexican and Italian eateries.
