This desert lake straddling the Nevada-California border south of Gardnerville offers excellent shore fishing. The scenery is rather stark and the winds can provide a significant challenge, but Topaz Lake is prized among fishermen for its trophy rainbow and brown trout, but it’s equally popular with campers and boaters looking for the perfect shoreside getaway.

Topaz Lake Park, at the northeast end of the lake near the boat launch, is located right on the water and offers visitors traveling by recreational vehicle 29 hook up sites complete with electric, water and dump stations. More traditional campers will find 40 developed campsites, as well as an assortment of more primitive camping locations. In addition to the phenomenal fishing, with catches typically in the four to eight pound range throughout the April to October high season, family-friendly Topaz Lake offers water lovers a host of other pleasurable water activities. Boaters, water skiers and jet skiers are common sights on the lake, and typically courteous enough to steer clear of those at Topaz strictly for the fish. Both California and Nevada fishing licenses are honored anywhere on the lake. Campers staying at Topaz Lake Park will also find nearby picnic grounds with lovely lake views. And should visitors feel the urge for a quick game of blackjack, the casino on the lake’s west shore is just the ticket.

There is dining and lodging also available. Both the lake and park sit on border between California and Nevada, roughly 75 miles south of Reno, 20 miles south of Gardnerville.
