The Lake Tahoe Basin offers some of the country's best downhill and cross-country resorts - but being close to chairlifts and cozy lodges doesn't mean you won't find plenty of backcountry skiing away from the crowds. Spooner Lake in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park offers a loop as well as a more challenging trek to Marlette Lake. For longer treks, Spooner rents cabins in the backcountry woods.
Getting There: From Reno, take U.S. 395 south to U.S. 50. Go west to State Route 28; 30 miles.
