ATV and four-wheel drive trails will take you to remote areas, old mining towns and scenic vistas. You can bring your own vehicles or take a tour operated by professional guides.

Popular trails are found in the Ruby Mountains, Merritt Mountain and Spruce Mountain.

ATV Recreational areas:

Maggie Creek: Accessible both from Carlin and State Route 226, this County road is maintained gravel and dirt and very accessible by a sport utility vehicle. This route travels through a nice variety of mining and ranching areas along Maggie Creek. Plenty of wildlife is usually visible from the road. Available to SUVs and ATVs.

Distance: 26 miles from Elko. Coal Mine Canyon: Just northeast of Elko, this well maintained dirt road provides access to several interesting 4WD trails. Plenty of rolling canyon driving makes this area fun to explore. Available to 4WD vehicles and ATVs.

Distance: 12 miles from Elko.

Merritt Mountain: Located North of Elko and East of Wild Horse Reservoir. Rich in historic mining cultures as well as beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife. Near the ghost town of Patsville and Rio Tinto. Available to 4WD vehicles and ATVs. Distance: 84 miles from Elko.

Spruce Mountain: Located South of Wells on U.S. Highway 93. Trail winds through varied terrain offering wildlife viewing Opportunities and goes near the site of the historic mining ghost town of Spruce Mountain. Available to 4WD vehicles and ATVs. Distance: 87 Miles from Elko.

Stag Mountain: Charleston and Jarbidge: Explore one of the most remote areas in Northern Nevada. The Jarbidge Mountains form a diamond shape, with eight of their peaks over 10,000 feet. Stag Mountain is a day trip. Charleston and Jarbidge require overnight camping. Available to 4WD vehicles and ATVs. Distance: 40 miles from Elko.

School and Sherman Creek: Historically ranching country, the trails around School and Sherman Creek provide plenty of wildlife viewing and scenic meadows. Available to 4WD vehicles and ATVs. Distance: 65 Miles from Elko.
