Ten-Day Classic Car-Themed Event Makes for a Rockin' Good Time in Reno-Sparks
By Charlie Johnston
We’re all familiar with the adage everything gets better with age—for Hot August Nights, the saying is doubly true. The Reno and Sparks celebration of classic cars and rock ’n’ roll is, quite literally, based on it. And the event’s growth from a concert and loosely organized parade in 1986 to a 10-day, multivenue festival 23 years later, exemplifies the saying.
The schedule of events for Hot August Nights, July 31-August 9, is daunting. It includes nearly 200 listings at more than a dozen venues around Reno and Sparks. It’s impossible to see it all, so plan your attack wisely. The official kickoff party, Monday, August 3, at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino and closing parade in downtown Reno on Sunday, August 9, are must-sees.
Other events you won’t want to miss include cruises in downtown Reno and Sparks and Show-n-Shine events at Atlantis Casino Resort, Circus Circus, Eldorado Hotel Casino, Grand Sierra Resort, John Ascuaga’s Nugget, Peppermill, and Silver Legacy Resort Casino. For a break from the cars, consider a Sock Hop at Circus Circus, a hula-hoop contest at Atlantis, or rock out with entertainers such as Peter Frampton, The Temptations & The Four Tops, and the Beach Boys.
If you want to remember your week of fun with a souvenir, but logo-emblazoned key chains and shirts aren’t your style, take something a little larger home. Drop by the Silver Auctions on Thursday, August 6 through Sunday, August 9 at the Reno Sparks Convention Center to bid on the classic you’ve always dreamed of—just remember to bring it back for a visit in 2010.
