Industry Partners Newsletter - Director’s Letter

Director's Letter

Happy summer to you all.  The Nevada Commission on Tourism isn’t just enjoying the special events, playing golf on the spectacular courses, hiking in our breathtaking mountains or even taking a dip in our lovely lakes... although it’s tempting to put work aside and Discover Nevada’s tremendous summer offerings!  We’ve been actively working on programming for FY13, processing grants, trying to bring a new integrated marketing agency on board, striving to create a world-class tourism and cultural affairs department and continuing to work with all of you to market Nevada to leisure and business travelers.

Contained in this newsletter is a release from the U.S. Department of Commerce reporting that travel to the US, in both spending and visitor numbers is well above last year's figures. According to Commerce, international visitors spent nearly $14 billion in travel to, and tourism-related activities within, the U.S; $1 billion (8 percent) more than May of last year, marking 29 straight months of growth. The report says the industry is on pace for a record-setting year with international visitors having spent more than $68 billion so far, up 12 percent compared to last year.

This is great news and with the recent addition of Terminal 3 at McCarran International Airport, the simplification of the visa processing in key international markets, the ongoing work of Nevada tourism entities in China and the Commission on Tourism’s new representation in critical emerging markets such as South Korea, Australia and Brazil, Nevada is well positioned to take advantage of this surge in international visitors.  As this growth continues, it will be imperative that Nevada be prepared to welcome these visitors. Having staff that can speak several languages, providing basic visitor information (both printed and digital) in a number of languages and even having local currency exchange opportunities will be important to ensure international visitors to Nevada have an extraordinary experience.

For those of you who want to be more involved in the international arena, Brand USA has tremendous partnership opportunities available, some of which are listed in this newsletter.  We also will hear from Brand USA at the upcoming Governor’s Conference on Tourism to better understand how we can maximize all opportunities.

It’s an incredibly exciting time to be in Nevada, both from a domestic and international marketing perspective.  Now is our time to seize opportunities and move this industry forward with never before seen momentum.  We will succeed by learning and working together.

Enjoy your summer.  Please let us know if we can do anything to help you build your business.
