Military buffs and defenders of the second amendment will find nothing more enjoyable than an afternoon spent browsing the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum. The small museum is locally run and dedicated to celebrating all things military. Visitors will find displays and exhibits of a range of ammunition dating back to the early part of the 20th century, as well as an in-depth look at the area’s munitions history. Like several of Nevada’s towns, Hawthorne began as a railroad town. But a 1926 disaster clear across the country altered the town’s destiny forever. After a U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot in New Jersey exploded, killing 21 people and raining shrapnel into the dense surrounding neighborhood, the Navy began searching for a less populated location to stockpile ammunition. The tiny town of Hawthorne was chosen, and in 1930, the first shipment of high explosives arrived at the newly built Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot. With it came Hawthorne’s new identity as a military town. Today, visitors can learn more about the town’s proud past with the Hawthorne Ordnance Museum’s collections. Beyond the ammunitions displays themselves, the museum features a variety of vintage and classic military uniforms, photographs, memorabilia, newspaper clippings from significant dates in history and more.
