Jarbidge Wilderness is certainly one of the most remote areas in Nevada and arguably the most spectacular. Quietly tucked away in the very northeast corner of Nevada, the Jarbidge Wilderness area is comprised of an unimaginable 113,000 acres with nearly 100 miles of hiking trails.
Dishing up untouched natural beauty that just wont quit, the Jarbidge Wilderness area was designated as Nevada’s first wilderness area in 1964 but has slowly expanded throughout the years. Today, the area encompasses Jarbidge and Emerald Lakes, as well as the headwaters of both the Marys and Jarbidge Rivers, and the Salmon Falls Creek. Pay particular attention when traversing areas with aspen groves, as visitors are likely to spot arborglyphs, or tree carvings left by Basque sheepherders many years ago. And, depending on the time of year, an unimaginable 60 varieties of wildflowers can be spotted in this vast wilderness area.
Outdoor adventure in this neck of the woods is truly never-ending, with enough world class hiking, fishing and hunting to keep you amused forever. Visitors will be surprised with the area’s rugged peaks, eight of which tower above 10,000 feet. Perhaps one of the most popular cross-country routes is Matterhorn Peak, a difficult but rewarding 12-mile loop that offers unmatched views of neighboring points from a magnificent 10,839 feet.
Jarbidge is also known for its premier fishing, as it’s the only place in the state of Nevada to nab the esteemed Bull Trout. Visitors can fish Jarbidge River right from the town of Jarbidge itself, or dive into the remote backcountry for a true back-to-nature experience. For additional fishing options, the Little Salmon River and its many tributaries are excellent for regularly hooking Rainbow and Brown Trout up to four pounds.
Jarbidge Wilderness Area also offers phenomenal hunting, as the majority of Nevada’s record deer and elk come from this region. Bird hunters will enjoy the number of sage grouse, chukar and pheasant found in the region as well.
Best yet, you certainly don't have to be a wilderness athlete to enjoy this extraordinary part of Nevada. Enjoy a relaxing drive through panoramic canyons, explore the nearby ghost towns of Tuscarora and Charleston, and spend the night in the charming town of Jarbidge for a Nevada memory that will go down in the record books. With boundless ways to enjoy this spectacular backcountry, make sure you’ve got Jarbidge Wilderness at the top of your next Nevada itinerary. A true must-see in Nevada!
