Rural Nevada Communities Receive Tourism Grants to Promote Local Attractions

CARSON CITY, Nev. — The Nevada Commission on Tourism (NCOT) has awarded 115 grants worth more than $659,000 to help rural communities promote attractions that draw visitors and generate revenue for local economies.

“One of NCOT’s most rewarding activities is to provide grants, which reap returns many times their value in visitor spending,” Lt. Gov. Brian K. Krolicki, NCOT chair, said. “They enable our rural communities to advertise and promote public awareness of all the fun things to see and do in historic mining towns and the majestic high-desert landscape.”

NCOT awards grants twice a year to public entities such as visitors authorities, cities and chambers of commerce, and each grant must be matched in value with local funds or labor.

Examples of grants include:

  • $3,500 for the city of Carlin to advertise the Carlin Chili Cook-off, which expects to generate $150,000 and for the first time is a sanctioned International Chili Society event.
  • $5,000 for the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce to print and distribute a brochure promoting the newly designated Lake Mead Adventure Parkway that exposes visitors to attractions along a route from Boulder City to the Moapa Valley, home of the Lost City Museum and dramatic desert scenery.
  • $5,000 for the Dayton Chamber of Commerce to advertise the new four-day, 200-vendor Dayton Sports Expo and 100-contestant Wild West Shootout, sanctioned by the North American Gun Dog Association, and staged along with Dayton Valley Days that draws 20,000 visitors.
  • $7,000 for the Fallon Convention and Tourism Authority to advertise and market a professional boxing event. Last year’s inaugural event drew more than 1,500 people, and this year it is expected to double its attendance and attract national television coverage.
  • $4,000 for the Walker River Paiute Tribe to produce a brochure highlighting what is available to tourists on the Walker River Paiute Reservation in Shurz.
  • $5,000 to the Pahrump Wild West Extravaganza to advertise the event in Southern California, Arizona, Las Vegas and Utah. The three-day festival in September includes Pony Express Trail Ride, a Civil War reenactment, an Indian village and Old West-style store fronts with food, entertainment, gifts and arts and crafts.
  • $7,500 to the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority to fund the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) Western Region Chapter meeting in 2010. The articles and images produced by this group of prolific travel journalists will reach millions of potential visitors.

“Many events, brochures and ads in rural areas would not be possible without the grant program and local support,” NCOT Director Dann Lewis said. “The requirement that the recipients match the grant in kind helps guarantee that the communities are truly dedicated to tourism promotion.”

Rural grants are awarded twice a year, and requests for grants are meticulously reviewed by NCOT staff and an advisory board before being approved by the commission.
