The easy and well-maintained Spooner Lake Trail offers pleasant views of the lake and its waterfowl, evergreens, wildflowers, and in the fall, blazing red aspen groves. Routes to Marlette Lake and the Flume Trail can also be accessed.
Type: Hiking
Distance: 2.1 miles roundtrip
Elevation: 7,150'
Difficulty: Beginner
Getting there: From Carson City, head south on U.S. 395 to U.S. 50 West. Head north on State Route 28 to the Spooner Lake parking area..

Type: Skiing, Boarding & Snowshoeing
The Lake Tahoe Basin offers some of the country's best downhill and cross-country resorts - but being close to chairlifts and cozy lodges doesn't mean you won't find plenty of backcountry skiing away from the crowds. Spooner Lake in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park offers a loop as well as a more challenging trek to Marlette Lake. For longer treks, Spooner rents cabins in the backcountry woods.
Getting There: From Reno, take U.S. 395 south to U.S. 50. Go west to State Route 28; 30 miles.
