The glory days of the true Old West, filled with brave pioneers seeking their fortunes and lone cowboys on the range, live on at the Humboldt Museum in Winnemucca. The extensive collection features relics and artifacts of this historic period and many others too, including the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression and even the Ice Age. Visitors to the Humboldt Museum will find a gargantuan display of castings of mammoth bones discovered in the Black Rock Desert. It’s an awesome sight that invites visitors to imagine a time when these magnificent creatures roamed the region.

Other exhibits and displays at the Humboldt Museum include a turn-of-the-century parlor, early examples of horseless carriages, a Native American collection and much more. The collection showcases artifacts from Humboldt County and the surrounding rural areas. Even the museum itself is a piece of history. The structure was built in 1907 and served as the St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in downtown Winnemucca before the entire building was hauled across the Humboldt River to its current location. When the museum’s collection grew too large for the structure, a second, larger building was added.

The friendly and knowledgeable staff at the Humboldt Museum is on hand to share the rich history of the museum’s pieces. Admission is free, and the museum is open seasonally from May through October.
