Types:

In July 1986 U.S. 50 was named “The Loneliest Road in America” by Life magazine, which quoted an AAA spokesman as saying, “It’s totally empty.” Yes, traffic is light from Fernley to Ely, but you will meet friendly people in the towns along the way.

Location:
In the stretch of highway east of Fallon to the Utah state line, a span of 287 miles, there are only three major towns: Austin, Eureka and Ely. There are also several ghost towns along this path.

Length: 287 miles/ 461.9 km

Time to Allow: Plan for 5 to 6 hours to tour this byway.

Seasonal road conditions: Seasons along the highway vary between towns. Winter and spring can be very unpredictable. This area has snow and rain storms through winter and early spring. In some of the towns along the highway you may be required to use chains or have 4WD.

This is a toll-free road. There is gasoline, food, and lodging available along the route but it is advised to plan ahead and schedule stops in cities that have supplies available, as there are long stretches between towns.
