Museums - Art
Endless outdoor adventure, good old-fashioned gaming, the occasional ghost town – and fine art? With award-winning museums showcasing collections of magnificent artwork, it’s easy to see just how much the Silver State appreciates art. Throw in the St. Mary’s Art Center in Virginia City, which offers both lodging and art instruction for accomplished artists, and Nevada’s art scene becomes even more impressive.
For a broad look at fine art, the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno is a must. The state’s only accredited art museum features a permanent collection of nearly 2,000 works divided into five sections, all of which share a general theme of land and environment. The museum also offers an interactive educational gallery dubbed the Nell J. Redfield Discover Center, which is designed to help visitors better appreciate its collections.
For an altogether different approach to art, spend some time at St. Mary’s Art Center. The constantly evolving center, which began in 1875 as a hospital before being abandoned until 1964, offers both accommodations and instruction to artists studying a plethora of media. From acrylic, oil, watercolor and pastel to sculpture, etching, photography and more, the center offers a range of artistic media, with two galleries maintained to showcase completed works.
Nevada may be synonymous with the Old West, gaming and adventure, but that doesn’t mean we don’t appreciate a beautiful painting. Take a tour of one of the Silver State’s spectacular art museums and discover a whole new side of Nevada.
