SUMMARY:Perseid Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:From Massacre Rim to Great Basin National Park\, Tonopah\, and beyond\, Nevada boasts some of the darkest skies in the country. Even though millions of stars\, constellations\, planets\, and galaxies are visible to the naked eye year-round here\, one of our favorite astronomical events is the Perseid Meteor Shower\, where 150-200 meteors streak through the sky every hour. Best yet\, this spectacular show happens every summer—right in the middle of Nevada’s prime-time Milky Way viewing season. Load up the whole family for a trek into some of the best stargazing conditions in the United States. \n\n\n\nStargazing in the Silver State gets that much sweeter during the Perseid Meteor Shower\, where 150-200 meteors streak through the skies every hour. \n\n\n\nThe Perseid Meteor Shower begins in mid-July and continues through late August. Peak viewing is typically expected August 9-13. Special equipment won’t be required to see the Perseids\, but telescopes\, dark sky charts/apps\, and even long-exposure camera setups can enhance the experience. We also recommend finding a secluded viewing spot away from the lights of major metropolitan areas. \n\n\n\nSome of the best places to see the Perseid Meteor Show include Lamoille Canyon & the Ruby Mountains\, the Tonopah Stargazing Park\, Lunar Crater\, Massacre Rim and the Black Rock Desert\, Basin and Range National Monument\, and both Great Basin National Park and Death Valley National Park—both of which are International Dark Sky Parks with Dark Sky Ranger-led programs happening year round. Otherwise\, just about anywhere in rural Nevada and away from metropolitan light pollution works\, too.

SUMMARY:Reno Basque Festival
DESCRIPTION:Nevada has the third largest Basque population in the U.S.\, and Reno knows how to celebrate it. Carrying on a tradition that started in 1966\, the Reno Zazpiak Bat Basque Club hosts the Reno Basque Festival: a free\, full-day celebration of the culture\, cuisine\, and community that Basque immigrants brought to the Silver State. \n\n\n\nEvery summer\, the Biggest Little City goes Basque with music\, dance troupes\, woodchopping\, weight carrying\, and a hearty lunchtime feast during the legendary Reno Basque Festival. \n\n\n\nThe festival kicks off with feats of strength: Athletes and amateurs alike compete in traditional weightlifting and wood-chopping exhibitions\, with more txinga (Basque-style weight-carrying competitions) rounding out the afternoon. Between events\, dance troupes keep the energy and excitement high. \n\n\n\nAnd then there’s the food. Our advice: Show up hungry. The not-to-be-skipped Basque lunch is a hearty highlight\, featuring heaping servings of lamb\, chorizo\, solomo (pork loin)\, beans\, salad\, bread\, cheese\, and wine\, all served in the generous\, communal style that make Nevada’s Basque boarding houses legendary. \n\n\n\nThe Reno Basque Festival\, located at McKinley Arts & Culture Center\, is free to attend and open to all. SUMMARY:Extraterrestrial Full Moon Races
DESCRIPTION:Ranging from a 5K to a 51K (and everything in between)\, the Extraterrestrial Full Moon Races invite runners of all skill levels to Rachel for an anything-but-ordinary experience. \n\n\n\nYou might not be able to outrun a UFO\, but you can look for them while competing against fellow racers during the Extraterrestrial Full Moon Races. \n\n\n\nTaking place along the famous Extraterrestrial Highway\, this overnight race begins and ends at a frontage road near the Alien Cowpoke General Store. Course distances include a 5K\, 10K\, half marathon\, marathon\, and a 51K\, named in honor of nearby Area 51. Racers hit the road between midnight and 1 a.m. depending on which course they’re running. Enjoy mild weather\, star-strewn dark skies\, and cups of water and Gatorade at regular intervals. Keep an eye out for uninvited—but not unwelcome—guests overhead\, too. \n\n\n\nAll racers receive a technical shirt\, finishers’ medal\, glow bracelet\, post-race refreshments\, and guarantees of alien fun. Overall and age group winners will get awards\, as will the racer with the best alien-inspired costume—so dress to impress. \n\n\n\nThe Extraterrestrial Full Moon Races take place at night on an open-range highway (meaning look out for cows and wildlife)\, so runners are required to wear reflective gear and either carry a flashlight or wear a headlamp. Racers who don’t want to drive themselves to Rachel can add on a roundtrip bus ride from Las Vegas and back.
