When you think of the year 1862, modern luxury doesn’t exactly come to mind. That is, unless you think 1862 David Walley’s Hot Springs Resort and Spa. Originally opened in (yep, you guessed it) 1862, this resort in the Genoa foothills has had it’s fair share of owners through the years and the current, Summer Winds Resorts, is finally giving the old place some much needed care. Rachel Jones, General Manager and driving force behind the half-million dollar spa renovation, presented her bosses with the idea of an upgrade and got the go-ahead right then and there. After a two month planning stage the actual work, all of which was overseen by Jones, took just three and a half months to complete.
Step into the spa and you find yourself immersed in timeless décor that seems to have come from the hills around Genoa. “We really wanted to bring the natural elements of the outdoors into the spa” says Jones, whose design includes floor to ceiling stone accented with glass tiles of the same earth tones and natural wood in a warm finish. The first floor offers lockers, a private changing space, spa showers, a steam room and dry sauna, and accesses the outdoor mineral soaking tubs via a private doorway. The pools, six total, include one that runs at kid-friendly temperature, two fiberglass pools with jets, and another three concrete pools, all of which vary in temperature depending on the time and day. A relaxation pool allows for space to swim in fresh water heated to 85 degrees.
The treatment access from the first floor changing room is where things really get good. If you’re heading up the stairs it means you’re in for a real treat. Facials range from focusing on wrinkle reduction to lip and eye treatments and also offer hydration, healing, a caviar mask, and more. For relief of the stress that everyday life brings, look to one of the amazing massages offered. The 1862 Spa Signature Massage is a combination of deep tissue, Swedish, and hot stone that may just put you to sleep. Hand and Foot, Cranial Sacral, Prenatal, and Couples Massages are all on the menu and are sure to put you in the same state.
For a truly unique experience consider booking one of 1862 David Walley’s Vichy Shower & Exfoliation treatments in which the mineral waters from the natural hot springs rain down on you while a technician rubs on a tropical salt mousse body scrub. Choose to follow the exfoliation with a de-aging wrap and you’re left with skin that is oxygenated and feels firm, toned, and hydrated. While other spas offer Vichy Showers, nothing compares to the 1862 David Walley’s version using their own thermal water.
Additional improvements throughout the resort are on the horizon. We’ll soon see an upgrade to the soaking pools, a continuation of the asphalt walking trail from Genoa that will extend it through the back side of the property to the gazebo, and a newly designed stage area to host local music and entertainment. Seasonal menus and monthly spa specials round out the enticing array of options offered at 1862 David Walley’s.
