Visitors passing through the antique wooden doors of the new and improved Humboldt County Visitors Center in Winnemucca are greeted by a wealth of information sharing the past and present of the region. And the best place to start? The friendly and knowledgeable chamber of commerce, who can share fascinating facts and stories about the town of Winnemucca and its surroundings.

One of the biggest displays at the Humboldt County Visitors Center is the William Humphreys Big Game Collection, which features more than 53 big game animals from more than four continents. Visitors can also explore the region’s mining past, as well as other local industries. Historical representations of the Great Basin, local Native American culture, the pioneer trail and the significant influence of the area’s Basque population can also be found. Another collection shares a stunning array of local mineral and rock specimens, which was amassed by local collectors and the Bureau of Land Management. The rock and mineral display is labeled by type and offers discovery information.

A particularly impressive section of the visitors center is the Buckaroo Hall of Fame, which shares authentic relics and artifacts from the buckaroos who helped tame the Great Basin. Memorabilia in the Buckaroo Hall of Fame includes traditional working gear, like the famed “Jack’s Saddle,” as well as paintings, drawings and sculptures.

Those passing through Winnemucca shouldn’t miss the opportunity to learn about the region’s rich past. The Humboldt County Visitors Center is the ideal place to brush up on a little history.
