There’s no better place to spend Valentine’s Day than Lovelock! People from all over flock to the small, agriculturally driven community of Lovelock each year to follow the ancient Chinese tradition of locking their love. In the Lover’s Lock plaza in the heart of downtown Lovelock, visitors can purchase a heart-shaped lock, and forever lock it to a chain with your soul mate, family member, friend, or anyone else that’s important in your life.
Also taking place during this annual event is the Lovers Aloft Hot Air Balloon race! This includes a special competition in which two hot air balloons are connected with surveyor’s tape around the baskets. The balloon pilots must work hard to coordinate their lift-offs without breaking the tape. Interestingly, the act symbolizes the effort that goes into marriage.
Near Valentine’s Day, each year’s festivities include a tribute to the search and rescue crews who worked for more than 2 days in sub-zero temperatures to find a missing Lovelock family whose Jeep had overturned while they were out exploring. The Lovers Aloft Hot Air Balloon Race is also part of the Inaugural Nevada State Balloon Championship Series, organized as part of the state’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2014.
Several Valentine’s Day-themed events are typically planned for this unique annual event, including a Murder-Mystery luncheon, Renewal of Marriage Vows, Locking Your Love in Lover’s Lock Plaza and of course the Lover’s Aloft Balloon Race and Rides.
