If you chose to visit Reno during the month of September, you’ll have a serious bevy of events to choose from. Of all the attractions happening, the Great Reno Balloon Race is arguably the most iconic and the reason is simple: it’s one of the year’s best family oriented events and it’s totally free. In fact, the Great Reno Balloon Race is the largest FREE hot air-ballooning event in the world, with over 120,000 attendees each year. Typically held during the second weekend in September, visitors can expect to enjoy three mornings waking up to a sky packed full of 100 balloons. What originally began as an event that would keep folks in town long enough to enjoy the State Fair and Reno Air Races has blossomed into one of Reno’s most favored events 35 years later and is valued as a world-renowned, beloved community tradition.
A popular favorite is Dawn Patrol, which kicks off at 5 a.m. Part of this is the Glow Show, where a handful of distinguished pilots illuminate their balloons in-sync to music before the sun rises. Also, don’t miss out on the ‘Worlds Largest Pajama Party,’ where visitors are encouraged to check out the event in their pajamas with their best [and worst] bed head.
