SUMMARY:Perseid Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:From Massacre Rim to Great Basin National Park\, Tonopah\, and beyond\, Nevada boasts some of the darkest skies in the country. Even though millions of stars\, constellations\, planets\, and galaxies are visible to the naked eye year-round here\, one of our favorite astronomical events is the Perseid Meteor Shower\, where 150-200 meteors streak through the sky every hour. Best yet\, this spectacular show happens every summer—right in the middle of Nevada’s prime-time Milky Way viewing season. Load up the whole family for a trek into some of the best stargazing conditions in the United States. \n\n\n\nStargazing in the Silver State gets that much sweeter during the Perseid Meteor Shower\, where 150-200 meteors streak through the skies every hour. \n\n\n\nThe Perseid Meteor Shower begins in mid-July and continues through late August. Peak viewing is typically expected August 9-13. Special equipment won’t be required to see the Perseids\, but telescopes\, dark sky charts/apps\, and even long-exposure camera setups can enhance the experience. We also recommend finding a secluded viewing spot away from the lights of major metropolitan areas. \n\n\n\nSome of the best places to see the Perseid Meteor Show include Lamoille Canyon & the Ruby Mountains\, the Tonopah Stargazing Park\, Lunar Crater\, Massacre Rim and the Black Rock Desert\, Basin and Range National Monument\, and both Great Basin National Park and Death Valley National Park—both of which are International Dark Sky Parks with Dark Sky Ranger-led programs happening year round. Otherwise\, just about anywhere in rural Nevada and away from metropolitan light pollution works\, too.

SUMMARY:Burning Man
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, upwards of 75\,000 revelers from all over the world transform Nevada’s Black Rock Desert into a bustling\, temporary metropolis. Attendees (aka Burners) traverse the playa and discover interactive art\, themed camps\, and an inclusive community. \n\n\n\n\nBurning Man Dates: Aug. 30–Sept. 7\, 2026\n\n\n\nWhere is Burning Man: Black Rock City\, which only exists for the duration of the event. The closest Nevada city is Gerlach. \n\n\n\nWhat is Burning Man: A gathering of artists\, creators\, and community builders who turn the Black Rock Desert into Black Rock City for just over a week\, roughly 120 miles north of Reno. \n\n\n\n2026 Burning Man Theme: Axis Mundi envisions The Man as “[Burning Man’s] version of the cosmic tree\, a Jacob’s Ladder connecting us to the unseen and unknowable.”\n\n\n\n\nBefore you head to Black Rock City\, dive into our Burning Man Survival Guide to get answers to FAQs as well as learn what to expect and what to pack. \n\n\n\nBurning Man Ticket Information\n\n\n\nBurning Man sells various types of tickets on a first-come\, first-served basis\, and they often sell out. The Main Sale is the big one to watch for: These tickets are open to everyone\, and those hoping to attend will need to register in advance of the ticket window opening. Payment plans are available\, and you’ll also need to purchase a vehicle pass. \n\n\n\nAdditional ticket programs are available for limited-income Burners and people who have been impacted by natural disasters or geopolitical conflict. Get complete ticketing dates and details from Burning Man Project’s website. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n Travel Nevada Pro Tip \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n You cannot buy Burning Man tickets at the gate. Everything—tickets\, vehicle passes\, and transportation—must be secured in advance. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nHow Much Do Burning Man Tickets Cost?\n\n\n\nMain Sale tickets range from $550 to $3\,000\, plus taxes and fees. All vehicles (except for motorcycles and towed vehicles) require a $165 pass. During the Main Sale\, attendees can purchase a maximum of two tickets and one vehicle pass while available. For those who qualify for Burning Man’s limited-income program\, tickets are $250 and vehicle passes are $75 (plus taxes and fees). \n\n\n\nFor anyone who misses tickets during the Main Sale\, Burning Man has a secure ticket exchange program (STEP) for reselling and purchasing authentic event tickets. \n\n\n\nHow to Get to Burning Man \n\n\n\nBy Car: Most Burners take I-80 from Reno-Sparks to Fernley or Wadsworth and then hop onto Nevada State Route 447 toward Gerlach. Expect the entrance gate to take anywhere from 2-10 hours. Travel prepared with water and snacks for the crawl. \n\n\n\nBy Bus: The Burner Express is an option for anyone with a Burning Man ticket. Bus service takes Burners from San Francisco and Reno to Black Rock City and back. Riding the bus also comes with perks\, including speedier entrance into the event\, reserved camping\, and expedited departures. Tickets go on sale in May with additional fees for bikes and extra luggage. \n\n\n\nBy Plane: The closest airport to Burning Man is Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Burner Express Air (BxA) also offers charter service from southern California\, the Bay Area\, and Reno to Black Rock City Municipal Airport (88NV). Like the Burner Express bus\, there’s an extra ticket required for this\, plus additional luggage limitations.

SUMMARY:Great Basin Astronomy Festival
DESCRIPTION:With the darkest\, quietest skies in the Lower 48\, Great Basin National Park is the perfect place for an astronomy festival. Unbelievable stargazing takes center stage over the course of three event-packed days (and nights)\, featuring everything from star parties and constellation talks to astrophotography workshops and Art in the Dark creations.   \n\n\n\nBy day\, explore Great Basin’s alpine lakes\, peak-bagging trails\, ancient bristlecone pine groves\, and the impressive Lehman Caves—but stick around at night to discover why “Half the Park is After Dark.” \n\n\n\nAll Astronomy Festival events are free\, making it one of the busiest and most exciting weekends to visit Great Basin National Park. Generous volunteers set up telescopes near the Astronomy Amphitheater to show off Nevada’s dazzling night sky to anyone interested in seeing far-off galaxies\, nearby planets\, and an endless number of dark sky objects. Expert guest speakers discuss astrophysics and astronomy\, and rangers help teach visitors how to identify constellations visible to the naked eye in the Great Basin night skies and beyond. Art in the Dark invites kids (and kids at heart) to create and paint in low-light conditions\, experimenting with how our eyes see color. \n\n\n\nSome special events do require advance registration\, but they’re well worth the extra effort. Tour the Great Basin Observatory\, which is the only research-grade observatory in a national park\, or hone your astrophotography skills during a night workshop geared toward beginners. Check on reservation details as the Great Basin Astronomy Festival draws nearer. \n\n\n\nHome to some of the last true dark skies in the country\, Great Basin is a DarkSky-certified park with an ethos to protect this rare and pristine nighttime environment. On clear\, moonless nights\, thousands of stars\, planets\, meteorites\, galaxies\, nebulas\, and beyond can be visible to the naked eye—made possible by Great Basin’s remote\, high elevation location\, which has some of the lowest light and noise pollution levels in the nation. \n\n\n\nAstronomy Program Schedule\n\n\n\nNot able to attend the Astronomy Festival? No problem! While this is the premier stargazing event in Nevada and certainly something every road tripper should experience at least once\, Great Basin National Park hosts additional astronomy programs throughout the year. \n\n\n\nLed by expert astronomy rangers\, each program includes a 30-minute talk followed by 90 minutes of star and space gazing through telescopes. Great Basin’s astronomy programs typically take place every Wednesday\, Thursday\, and Saturday during the summer months (Memorial Day through Labor Day) and then Saturdays only through late October. No reservations are needed to attend these free programs\, but arrive early—there is a capacity cap\, and visitors will be turned away once the Lehman Caves Visitor Center parking lots have filled up.

SUMMARY:International Camel & Ostrich Races
DESCRIPTION:It sounds like a hoax—and started as one—but the International Camel & Ostrich Races draw thousands to Virginia City for an anything-but-ordinary experience. Professional and amateur jockeys climb atop camels\, ostriches\, and even zebras in hopes of being first across the finish line while spectators cheer from the stands and enjoy a weekend of carnival-style festivities. \n\n\n\nKnown for the largest silver discovery in the world\, Virginia City is also known for hosting an unforgettable array of only-found-here events—and the International Camel & Ostrich Races are no exception. \n\n\n\nMark Twain didn’t come up with the idea of racing camels in Nevada’s high desert terrain\, but the Virginia City newspaper he worked for—the Territorial Enterprise—did. Continuing a longstanding feud with the San Francisco Chronicle\, the Enterprise ran a fictitious story about camels racing in Virginia City\, which the Chronicle believed and reprinted. Realizing they were the butt of a joke\, the Chronicle sent a team of jockeys and camels borrowed from the San Francisco Zoo to the Silver State the following year—and in 1959\, a tradition was born.  \n\n\n\nThe International Camel & Ostrich Races hold four contests over three days. Hot Camel Nights kicks off the fun Friday evening\, and Saturday features both a morning and afternoon race (plus a Camel Hump on C Street). Sunday is Family Day\, with free camel rides available for the first 100 kids. Food trucks and arts and crafts vendors add to the atmosphere. Between races\, stroll Virginia City’s boardwalks and check out historic saloons\, old-school candy shops\, and Wild West photo parlors. \n\n\n\nA variety of seating options are available\, including shaded and VIP offerings. To really make memories\, pick up a ticket to race a camel yourself. For complete International Camel & Ostrich Races details\, visit Virginia City’s website.
