Here, you will have the opportunity to get a first-rate glimpse at some of Nevada's unique geology, showcased with a variety of Nevada's rock specimens and field photography. Get to know Nevada's multitude of unique plants and animals, including America's largest exhibited mammoth, which was uncovered in our very own Black Rock Desert! It is here you can get up close to Nevada's seldom seen creatures, like the desert bighorn sheep, black bear, Great Basin rattlesnake, sage grouse and Lahontan cutthroat trout.
Connect with Nevada's American Indian heritage through 10,000-year-old artifacts, including intricately woven baskets in the "Under One Sky" exhibit, housed in the newer wing of the museum. This moving exhibit presents Native American culture from the perspective of Native Americans, in their own words. Find out when humans first occupied the Nevada portion of the Great Basin, the natural foods they collected and the skills they implemented for survival. Experience the fascinating reconstruction of a Great Basin cave, containing evidence of past cultures and climate!
For even more interactive exhibits, explore a replicated mining town and take a stroll through an underground mine that helps tell the timeline of Nevada's rich mining history. Be sure to check out the USS Nevada Silver Silver Service and the G.S. Garcia Saddle as well! As the museum is housed in the former Carson City Mint, you will have the delight of viewing the Mint's original Coin Press No. 1, and the display of the famous Carson City "CC" mintmark silver dollars.
