Alien Attractions in Nevada

High elevation, lack of light pollution, and a unique desert climate make Nevada’s night skies some of the darkest in the Lower 48. On any given night, you can see thousands of stars without a telescope, but celestial bodies aren’t the only thing that draws visitors to this remote desert highway: These horizons are allegedly one of the best places in the U.S. to spot UFOs.

Nevada UFO Sightings

Why do UFO hunters and extraterrestrial enthusiasts flock to the Silver State?

For one thing, Nevada is the home of Area 51, a once-secret military installation within the Nevada Test and Training Range. According to the rumors, the site houses a fleet of otherworldly spacecraft (and possibly even extraterrestrial lifeforms themselves).

The source of those rumors? Bob Lazar, a former Area 51 Air Force staffer who dazzled Las Vegas television stations with unconfirmed stories in the 1980s. He claimed to have worked on flying saucers and alien spaceships in Tikaboo Valley, just south of Rachel.

Here’s what we know for sure: The Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (a study of aerial phenomena conducted by the U.S. government) was a real thing. The stories you’ll hear along the Extraterrestrial Highway are a bit less official…but that makes them all the more mysterious.

The best places to make extraterrestrial contact are the Alien Research Center, E.T. Fresh Jerky, and the mysterious Black Mailbox.

Area 51 is totally real—and totally off limits. The site is an active military base guarded by heavy security. Obey all posted signs and don’t even think about trespassing.
