Reno to Lake Tahoe
36 to 60 miles
- Hike, bike, beach bum & more at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Parks
- Ski, ride, and play in the snow at a dozen Lake Tahoe ski resorts
- Wine, dine, game it up, and party down at Stateline’s famous casinos
Dozens of sandy beaches, thousands of hiking and biking trails, crystal-clear water ripe for scenic cruises and SUPs… a dozen ski resorts, tours on snowmobiles, snowshoes, and horse-drawn sleighs… world-class entertainment, luxurious hotels, high-end shopping, and top-notch restaurants… if this picture calls your name, you and 3 million others a year aren’t wrong. How far is Lake Tahoe from Reno? Depends which of the lake’s 72 miles of shoreline you’re bound for. We recommend driving to Lake Tahoe’s quieter North Shore first, then taking a drive around the lake via the splendorous #NevadaSide to lively South Lake Tahoe.
Lux it up at the Hyatt’s private beach and lakefront dining in Incline Village, or opt for old-school Tahoe vibes and killer concerts in Crystal Bay, or go big at one of Stateline’s four towering, entertainment-packed casinos.

Lake Tahoe to Carson Valley (Genoa, Minden, Gardnerville & Topaz Lake)
20 miles
- Drink in the history at Genoa Bar & Saloon, Nevada’s oldest “thirst parlor”
- Taste Nevada’s officially unofficial state cocktail at J.T. Basque Bar & Dining Room
- Soak away your cares in hot springs at luxuriant, historic David Walley’s Resort
Your trip takes a turn for the idyllic in the towns of scenic, rural Carson Valley, with its mountain-studded backdrop. First stop: Genoa. Pore (or pour) over history in Nevada’s very first settlement at Mormon Station State Historic Park and Nevada’s oldest “thirst parlor.” Meander to Minden to check out artifact-packed Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park and grab a house-smoked bite washed down by one of 31 beers at Minden Meat & Deli. Then hunt antiques along Gardnerville’s flowery streets, pausing for a stiff Picon Punch at the local 125-year-old Basque joint.
In Genoa, feel the day’s adventures melt away in palatial rooms and hot spring pools at David Walley’s Resort, or bask in 19th-century charm at the White House Inn. Modern comforts await in the hearts of Minden and Gardnerville.

Carson City: Capitalizing on Culture
17 miles
- Uncover Nevada’s storied past at two state museums and Stewart Indian School
- Tackle “The Triathlon” with hot springs + local brews + fresh food
- Walk through Nevada history along the 48-stop Kit Carson Trail
A short drive up US-395 carries you to Nevada’s capital. Even before statehood in 1864, Carson City connected everywhere else on this road trip—from the lumber bases of Lake Tahoe to the silver shafts of Virginia City, the breadbasket of Carson Valley to the westward hub of Reno. Dive into those stories at three museums and on a historic walking tour. Then make some of your own on pedal-powered rail tours, waterfall hikes, and a challenge we call The Triathlon—a confluence of hot spring soaks, craft brews, and eclectic cuisine.
Stay in the heart of walkable downtown Carson City, minutes from great dining, shopping, and attractions.

Party On the Comstock
15 miles
- Revel it up at some of the weirdest, wildest events in the West
- Tour real-deal silver mines and mills, by foot or on the V&T Railroad
- Hunt ghosts in some of Travel Channel & SyFy’s favorite haunts
Wandering the boardwalk-lined streets of exceptionally historic Virginia City (the whole damn town is on the National Register of Historic Places), it’s easy to believe you’ve been dropped into the 19th century. In fact, while dancing to a cowboy band with locals clad in Western getups at a joint called the Bucket of Blood, it’s pretty hard NOT to. Get ready to let loose in a still-wild, still-Western silver mining town that loves its dozen-plus museums and funky shops as much as its off-the-wall races (from camels to outhouses), haunted hotels, and themed saloon crawls.
Not many people can say they stayed the night in one of the richest places in the West. When it comes to ol’ VC, choose between perfectly restored Victorian opulence, amenity-packed modern comforts, or plenty in between.
