Explore Historic Downtown Carson City

Start in downtown Carson City—the heart of the capital—where historic buildings house Nevada history, popular dining, and independent shops within several charming, walkable blocks. Follow the painted blue line along the Kit Carson Trail for a self-guided tour through the West Side Historic District, passing Victorian-style homes, churches, and landmarks like the Nevada Governor’s Mansion.

As you wander Carson Street, it’s hard to miss the silver-hued dome of the Nevada State Capitol. Stroll shady grounds lined with trees from every Nevada county before heading inside to explore Battle Born Hall, a 2,000-square-foot museum highlighting Nevada’s path from prehistory to today.

Outdoor Recreation

Carson City makes it easy to pair indoor attractions with outdoor adventures. Minutes from downtown, the short-but-scenic Kings Canyon Waterfall trail leads to a splashy payoff, while Carson Hot Springs’ mineral-rich waters have been drawing soakers for more than 150 years.

A few minutes north, Washoe Lake State Park offers windsurfing, wildlife watching (look for migratory birds and wild horses), and wide-open views of the Sierra Nevada and Virginia Range.

After a short drive, visitors will find themselves in the dense, pristine forests of the Sierra Nevada. Stop at Spooner Lake & Backcountry State Park for hiking, biking, fishing, snowshoeing, and backcountry cabin stays all within easy reach. Just west of Spooner Lake sprawls Lake Tahoe, home to multiple state parks like Sand Harbor State Park, which offers year-round beach days and easy access to the Tahoe East Shore Trail.

Travel Nevada Pro Tip

For an only-found-here spin on outdoor activity, take on the Carson City Triathlon: Raise a glass at Shoe Tree Brewing Company, enjoy a meal at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint, and relax with a dip at Carson Hot Springs—all just steps from one another.

Travel Nevada Adventure Center–Carson City

Opening next door to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in 2027, the northern Nevada outpost of Travel Nevada Adventure Centers will help visitors plan their next outdoor adventure, whether that’s by kayak, mountain bike, or off-road rig.

The perfect starting point for any outdoor excursion, this conveniently located basecamp connects travelers with tours, gear rentals, expert guidance, and resources for responsible recreation across the Sierra Nevada, Walker River, and beyond.

Historic Attractions

Nevada’s capital delivers history you can walk through, step inside, and even ride.

Start things off at the Nevada State Museum, housed in the former Carson City Mint. Exhibits cover everything from the Comstock Lode and the history of Nevada to American Indian culture and a replica underground mine. Don’t miss historic Coin Press No. 1, which still shows how coins were struck when this building operated as an official U.S. mint.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum keeps the region’s railroading history right on track with vintage locomotives, restored rail cars, artifacts tied to the legendary Virginia & Truckee Railroad, and rides on historic railcars.

Nevada State Prison adds a different kind of history stop. Seasonal tours explore one of Carson City’s most storied sites, from its 19th-century founding to its long-running haunted reputation.

Travel Nevada Pro Tip

Signature Events

Carson City’s event scene brings food, music, heritage, and hometown pride to the heart of Nevada’s capital. At Taste of Downtown, local restaurants turn city streets into a walkable tasting route with small plates and live music. Capital City Brewfest keeps the summer energy flowing with local and regional breweries, vendors, and bands.

Cultural celebrations are a major part of the city’s year-round rhythm, too. The Stewart Father’s Day Powwow honors Nevada’s American Indian heritage and pride with dancers, drum performances, food, and vendors. At the Brewery Arts Center, Carson City’s arts and culture scene continues with plenty of live music, theatrical performances, gallery shows, classes, and community events to fill the calendar.

There’s no better place to geek out on train history than the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City. Not only does this place feature fully operational steam locomotives from 1875, but it’s also home to the McKeen Motor Car, one of only *three* National Historic Landmarks that moves. 🤓

I wish we had hot springs close to where we live. I think that was our favorite activity in Carson City: hike in the cold, then hit the hot springs... And then do it again the next day.⁣

What is something healing and healthy you're doing for yourself this week? Remember, if you don't take care of yourself, you won't be there to take care of others. ⁣
⁣
Something I'm going to do to take care of me this week is to make the time to take an outdoor nap. I know, that sounds ridiculous since it's nearly winter, but we live in Florida, so it's doable.⁣

You almost thought this was just another snow skiing photo in your feed huh? Gotcha! This is some good old backcountry BLM land sand skiing just minutes from our place in Carson City. I happened upon this giant sand hill while running one morning and knew what had to be done 😁

There’s a saying: “you miss 100% of the sunrises you sleep through even though you set your alarm and you snooze your way through a whole hour you could have been up owning the morning.”
