Nevada Magazine & Visitor Guide is the official state tourism magazine. Since the publication first appeared in 1936, readers have relied on Nevada Magazine for informative and entertaining features on the Silver State. Readers are active travelers and Nevada enthusiasts. We also print other special projects.
Writer’s Guidelines

Guidelines
- VOICE: Stories in Nevada Magazine & Visitor Guide offer an authentic and engaging look at the state that appeals to readers both in-state and around the world. Your article should be written from personal experience, interviews, or quality research. When developing your ideas, please consider the publication’s structure and style. You can find the magazine on our website or click here to order a free copy.
- PAYMENT: Stories are accepted on speculation. Payment is on publication and varies with article length and quality. The average rate for a feature-length story is $300, however this value will be negotiated. Nevada Magazine & Visitor Guide does not pay expenses (travel costs, etc.). It is important to note that payment is made by direct deposit and may take up to a month after publication to get processed.
- PRINTING RIGHTS: For printed stories, the magazine buys first North American serial rights as well as the right to publish, distribute, archive, and otherwise use the material in whole or in part in print, electronic, or any other media, and for promotional purposes related to Nevada Magazine & Visitor Guide and Travel Nevada’s publications and services.
- PHOTOS: To receive the magazine’s bimonthly Photo Alert, which lists photo needs, sign up with the form at the bottom of this page.

Photographer’s Guidelines
We feature high-quality photographs showing off the best of Nevada. If you have crisp, well-composed, beautiful photos that relate to subjects we feature, we may be interested in printing them.
Guidelines
- PHOTO SUBMISSIONS: Unsolicited submissions are not preferred, and it is best to submit your images in response to our quarterly photo alert emails. To receive the Photo Alert, sign up with the form below. If you have images that will fit our needs for a particular issue you can email them to: Art Director Kippy Spilker at [email protected]. Please put the subject and issue date in the subject line. We will contact you later if we need the high-resolution version(s). We prefer you send an initial sampling of low-resolution images, and please provide your mailing address. Please edit images down to a small selection of your best shots.

PAYMENT: Photos are accepted on speculation. Payment is on publication and Editorial-use rates vary according to the size published:

Commercially-licensed images receive a flat rate of $800 for non-exclusive use. We will contact you with the full version of this form if we are interested in licensing your image(s).
If you plan to submit images of people to be considered for commercial license, you must use our model release form. Please include a copy of this form when submitting your images. Images of people not accompanied by our model release will not be considered for commercial licensing.
*It is important to note that payment could take up to a month after publication to get processed and mailed to the photographer.
ASSIGNMENTS: We rarely set up assignments with photographers. Again, the best way to keep informed of our photo needs is via our quarterly e-mail Photo Alert. To receive the Photo Alert, sign up with the form below.
Our Nevada Photographers Facebook group is another great outlet.
When you’re out shooting, think of how you can get people enjoying Nevada in your photos. Remember, people engaging in activities adds a nice touch.
- COPYRIGHT: By submitting your photograph, you grant Nevada Magazine & Visitor Guide the right to publish, distribute, archive, and otherwise use the photograph in whole or in part in print, electronic, or any other medium and for promotional purposes related to Nevada Magazine & Visitor Guide and its products, services, and issue overruns. Nevada Magazine & Visitor Guide is a division of the Nevada Division of Tourism, which sometimes uses the magazine’s content. We will keep all thumb drives for future use unless you tell us otherwise. This allows us to consider your images in the future.
- PRINT-READY IMAGES: If we request a high-resolution image of yours, that means we’re considering it for a print publication. Digital images should be 300 dpi, and at least 8.5 inches wide if possible. Please include caption information with all photos. If we have indicated a spread or photo feature, files that are 11 x 17 inches or larger may be required. The magazine reserves the right to crop or edit all images. We accept eps, jpg, and tif files. Images can be sent on a CD, or an FTP site is available. To get FTP submission instructions, please e-mail Art Director Kippy Spilker at [email protected]. Some photographers choose to send their files via Dropbox or an Internet service like it.
- PHOTO CONTEST: The magazine holds an annual photo contest, the “Great Nevada Picture Hunt.” Look for the entry form and contest rules in the Spring issue each year. The deadline for entries generally falls during late June/early July. The winning photos are featured in the Fall issue and on this website.
