The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering

The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering (NCPG) has been happening in Elko for 42 years, yet I’d reckon the majority of you reading this haven’t heard of this signature Nevada event. If that’s your situation, consider this your yeehaw moment, which is something akin to those big-city ah-ha moments.
The Gathering, as it’s affectionately known, is a week-long celebration of the rural West. These celebrations come in various guises: workshops, dances, headliner shows, open mic nights, films, culinary events, and yes, even more.
Saddle Up
If you’re now thinking, “But folk art isn’t my jam,” or some such malarkey, let me assure you that if you’ve never even listened to a poetry reading or tapped your toe to a fiddle, you will still enjoy NCPG. How am I so sure? Because it happened to me, and I saw how this event transcends simplistic labels.
Let me paint a picture of just one possible day at The Gathering: I woke to a brisk January morning, which only served to make the delicious waffles I had at Dreez (just one of many amazing Elko restaurants) even more tasty. Then I headed to the first item on my agenda— a build-your-own hat workshop—while another in my group went to a full-day event at a local ranch. Another friend took a class on writing poetry. That afternoon, I took a Western-style horse drawing class before we met up at an evening show. There, poets and musicians gather to perform, reminisce, and share stories.
These shows are my personal favorite; it’s like you’re watching old friends gathered around a campfire and each one takes turns performing for the group. What I love most is how deeply intimate the performances feel. These are seriously talented and well-known performers, but the authenticity and genuineness of the performances make them surprisingly evocative. Prepare to be entertained and, perhaps, just a little bit moved.
Ride Tall
If you’re still not convinced there’s something for you at NCPG—despite learning the 2026 event hosted more than 175 activities—I must call out the incredibly diverse vendor area offering everything from baked bread to cowboy hats designed on the spot. My group picked up vintage clothing, stunning hair accessories, the event’s signature scarf (aka wild rag), and so much more. The first timers in my group concurred: The possibilities for fun, entertainment, and just general satisfaction are nearly endless.
In a world where hype and virtual reality flood our senses, the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering is an event that speaks quietly—albeit often with deep laughter—and touches the soul with its deeply intimate feel. The Wild West and the lore of the cowboy lifestyle is alive and rich. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed to step into their boots for just a spell.

BE BRAVE.
Open mic nights happen each day, and whether you’re an aspiring cowboy poet or a fledgling fiddle player, there’s room on the stage for you. Just make sure you sign up early for those, too!
MIX IT UP.
See as many types of shows as you can and fit in time to take a few classes. The free shows that happen all over town are worth seeing just as much as the paid shows.

GATHER YOUR GEAR.
You don’t have to look like you stepped off the set of “Yellowstone,” but know there are some seriously stylish outfits to be seen. Find your cowboy comfort level, whether it’s a simple pair of boots or a full ensemble with a wild rag. Do dress in layers as it’s definitely wintertime.
