History of Minden, NV

We all have the Dangberg family to thank for bringing the city of Minden into existence. Back in 1857, before Minden was Minden, Heinrich Friedrich (H.F.) Dangberg established Dangberg Ranch, which eventually grew to tens of thousands of acres and led to the creation of the Dangberg Land and Livestock Company. It was on this land that H.F. Dangberg, Jr. founded Minden, NV in 1905, named after a German town near the birthplace of his father. The vision was to build a European-styled planned community around the town square of Minden Park, and – key to the community’s future – land was donated to the V&T Railroad so that the rail line could be extended to Carson Valley, with the route ending smack dab in Minden. This course of action helped turn the entirety of the Carson Valley into an agricultural hub, and these roots are still alive and thriving today.

Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park
Historic Downtown Minden

Get the full, fascinating story straight from the source when you step foot into the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. The postcard-perfect acreage features a still-standing stone cellar from 1867 and numerous original buildings. Inside, guided tours showcase the personal wardrobe of the Dangbergs, the oldest pair of Levi’s in the state of Nevada, stories of how Minden’s founding family is connected to the inventor of the Ferris wheel, and endless amounts of unbelievable artifacts.

Travel Nevada Pro Tip

It’s hard to pick a favorite artifact at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park, but, before you go, challenge everyone in your crew to try. Our suggestion? Keep your eyes peeled for the vintage pair Levi’s and the display on Katrina’s pet skunks.

If you like a little history with your travel consider a day trip to the Carson Valley next time you are in Tahoe, Reno or Carson City.

While most of the Nevada / California history centers around the Gold and Silver booms of the 1800’s (I mean, it was a big deal) ... The Carson Valley was established as an agricultural hub and while there are many working ranches there are also plenty of spots to take in the history of the region.

Three places to check out -

The Town of Genoa - Nevada’s oldest town. Established in 1851 as a trading post for trappers and explorers and then a stop on the Overland Emigrant Trail. Genoa still holds it’s small town charm. Stop into the Country Market, the Pink House for lunch and Nevada’s Oldest Thirst Parlor for a drink.

Mormon Station State Park - In the heart of Genoa sits a beautiful park with expansive grass and full trees in the Summer. What’s more is this park houses a museum and artifacts dedicated to the history of the town itself in its early days as a trading post. Originally established by a group of Mormon’s from Salt Lake.

Dangberg Home Ranch - Surrounded by real working ranches (pictured), is the Dangberg Historic Home Ranch. The Dangberg family established in 1856 and grew their ranch to 50,000 acres over generations shaping Nevada’s history. The original buildings still stand and you can tour the grounds and enjoy a glimpse into ranch life over a hundred years ago.

Do yourself a favor and serve your vodka cold. Very cold.

Did you know that chilling vodka adds texture and makes the spirit smoother? Chilled vodka also serves as a palate cleanser...that’s why vodka-drinking countries tend to serve vodka with food. Make sure you treat both our classic and sherry rested vodkas right, and chill them before serving. Your mouth will literally thank us.

This cute stand alone drive thru/walk up coffee shop is perfect for a quick cup of coffee. If you’re passing through, in a rush, or just want a reasonably priced coffee this is the place.

I ordered a 12oz hot hazelnut latte & my sister got an iced Irish cream cold brew (Both cost $3.50). Our drinks were perfectly made and just down right delicious. Plus the small town charm adds to the overall experience.

Reasonably priced, quality coffee, & quick customer service. What more can you ask for?
