⁣
Trail name: Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail⁣
Location: Boulder City, Nevada⁣
Distance: 8.2 miles out-and-back (or as far as you want to go)⁣
Difficulty: Easy⁣
⁣
Includes: ⁣
- 5 railroad tunnels, roughly 300 ft by 25 ft in diameter ⁣
- Panoramic views of Lake Mead, Boulder Basin, and Hoover Dam, with the South Virgin Mountains rising up in the distance ⁣
⁣
Fun fact: After the Hoover Dam was completed in 1935, the railroad ceased operation. In 1962 the tracks were removed, and the trail opened in 1995. ⁣

Have you ever visited a ghost town?

Nelson, site of the most successful gold mining boom in southern Nevada, housed Techatticup mine, famous for being one of the most lawless mining towns of its time, that even law enforcement avoided it completely.

A spontaneous stop turned out to be one of the most exciting places we visited in Nevada. This stunner, North American T-28B Trojan/Bu, is not an actual crashed plane but stored dismantled at the mine, making this ghost town 100x cooler ✈️

Nevada just might have some of the best sunsets I’ve seen in quite a while. Still day dreaming of this one I witnessed along Highway 50, “the Loneliest Road in America” back in May. 😍

…Solo travel isn’t just about the places you visit; it’s about the person you become along the way. It’s about seeing new places and seeing yourself in new ways. It’s about collecting not just souvenirs but stories, and not just photos but memories. It’s about empowering yourself through independent exploration, learning that the journey within can be as vast and wonderful as the journey outside. So, if you’ve ever thought about taking off on your own, remember, the world is not just out there to be explored; it’s also inside you, waiting to be discovered.

Although this isn’t in Mammoth, I sure am looking forward to hitting some hot springs soon, especially with this colder weather upon us. My first stop on my next trip coming up will be in Mammoth, so I’ll definitely be hitting the springs up there. But looking at this image, it brings me right back to that exact moment in time to where I got to see a killer sunset, and with great people. This shot was taken minutes after they stepped out of the springs to grab some food from their RV. As they stepped out, I took a few minutes to capture some shots of the sunsets reflection in the water and the flames burning in the mountain horizon. Not really, but it does kind of look like the distant mountains are on fire. Although this isn’t in Mammoth, you can find this gem just under 4 hours northeast from Mammoth.

All week there has been these big beautiful clouds over Lake Tahoe all day. But as the sun starts to go down they seem to race over the mountains and into the Carson Valley on the Nevada side. It makes for some boring sunsets in Lake Tahoe but spectacular sunsets and afternoon storms along the Eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada. This was shot from Kingsbury Grade looking over at Jobs peak.
