History of Verdi
Step back in time to an era of sawdust and steel. Verdi was carved out by the Central Pacific Railroad in the 1860s. Originally called O’Neil’s Crossing, the town was renamed Verdi—honoring the famed Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi—after a random draw from a hat.
While the railroad may have founded the town, Verdi’s most important industry was timber. The nearby Sierra Nevada forests fed sawmills, with the Crystal Peak Company operating some of the most productive mills in the region. Logs were floated down the Truckee River, processed, and sent by rail to growing cities out West. Oliver Lonkey, an early settler and savvy businessman, helped turn Verdi into a bustling frontier community with general stores, hotels, and saloons.
Famously, Verdi made history in 1870 when it became the site of Nevada’s first train robbery. A group of bandits held up a Central Pacific train just outside of town, escaping with a small fortune in gold and silver—some of which was never recovered.
Today, the whir of saws has quieted, replaced by the rustle of wind through trees and the occasional train whistle. Verdi wears its rugged past with pride, layering pioneer grit over a peaceful, modern-day backdrop.
