hickison burro herd

This storied burro territory is located 20 miles east of Austin in Nevada’s Big Smoky Valley. Typically, visitors can spot the Hickison Burro Herd while traveling along the Loneliest Road in America. Keep an eye out for these kind and intelligent creatures anywhere between Hickison Petroglyphs and the area surrounding Toquima Cave near Pete’s Summit. The band typically retreats to Spencer Hot Springs during evening hours to get a drink from this natural water source that they so seriously depend on.

Located on the northwestern portion of the Toquima Mountain Range, it is believed that these mostly black or brown-black burros first appeared in the 1940s through escape and abandonment from past mining and ranching operations.
