Ever since the opening of Legends at Sparks Marina, the outlet mall has been wildly successful, with a diverse range of stores, restaurants, and entertainment. “The Legends is a good idea and great for the area,” says Elaine Kern, a Reno-Sparks resident. “It’s very inviting.”
Conveniently located next to the Sparks Marina and RV Park, the mall not only features a large range of stores and restaurants, but also pays homage to Nevada’s finest. This includes people, significant events, geographical regions, and the state animals, flowers, and plants. So, while you enjoy a relaxing day of shopping, you’ll be getting an educational experience on the side.
These icons are represented in a variety of ways, including statues, fountains, and plaques. The mall features more than 60 Legends. Some of the more recognizable legends include John "Snowshoe" Thompson, a Carson Valley hero that delivered the mail via the Sierra Nevada for 20 years, and Sarah Winnemucca, the first American Indian woman to publish a novel in the English Language.
Other Legends are Mark Twain, a famous American author who spent several years writing for Nevada’s first newspaper, the Territorial Enterprise in Virginia City, and William F. Harrah, an American businessman and founder of Harrah’s hotels and casinos. Other Nevada legends include railroad laborers, Basque sheepherders, the Pony Express, the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, and the mining of the Comstock Lode.
The mall brings a whole new kind of shopping experience to the area with such stores and restaurants as Banana Republic, Scheels All Sports, The Bose Factory Stores, Jazz: A Louisiana Kitchen, Volcom, Nike Factory Stores, Fudruckers, Old Farmer’s Almanac, Grimaldi's Pizzeria, Forever 21 and the area's first IMAX theater experience.
While the area already has the outdoor mall, The Summit Reno, Legends is entirely different, according to local resident Lynn Hughes. “I like the atmosphere here. It’s clean, bright, and compact and has a lot of additional seating to rest.”
Heidi Crain, a Reno-Sparks resident says, “I like the design of Legends. The outdoor shopping is great, and there’s lots of stuff to do. The summer concerts are great, and best of all, it’s family oriented.”
The new mall provides a boost to the Reno-Sparks economy. According to the Meridian Business Advisory and the University of Nevada, Reno Center for Regional Studies, the Legends at Sparks Marina will create 4,400 jobs per year and have an annual economic impact of $415 million for the next 20 years.
Legends at Sparks Marina is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
