Most Popular Nevada State Parks

We adore all 27 of Nevada’s state parks equally. However,  if you’ve only got enough time to see the greatest hits, these are some of the showstoppers.

Valley of Fire State Park

Red sandstone formations twist and glow in the sunlight, earning Valley of Fire State Park its red-hot name—and plenty of fans. Nevada’s oldest state park draws visitors with vivid hikes like the Fire Wave and White Domes Trail, plus easy roadside pullouts packed with ancient petroglyphs. Wildlife sightings are common, especially desert bighorn sheep (who navigate the terrain like pros). Come early or stay late for the best light and smallest crowds.

Sand Harbor State Park

If you’ve seen a photo of Lake Tahoe’s Nevada side, there’s a good chance it was taken here. Sand Harbor State Park is home to crystal-clear waters, smooth boulders, and golden sand. Take advantage of the boat launch and kayak rentals in summer, and don’t miss your chance to attend the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, performed lakeside with the Sierra Nevada as a backdrop.

Cathedral Gorge State Park

You can thank millions of years of volcanic activity for the otherworldly landscapes at Cathedral Gorge State Park. Weave through seemingly endless slot canyons or follow a handful of trails surrounded by towering hoodoos. The panoramic views at Miller Point Overlook cannot be missed.

Consejo experto de Travel Nevada

During peak season, day-use reservations are required for Sand Harbor State Park and Big Bend of Colorado State Recreation Area. All other Nevada state parks are open for day use without reservations. Visit Reserve Nevada to purchase entrance passes and book campsites, group areas, and cabins.

Unique & Historic Parks in Nevada

Nevada’s story spans eons, from massive Triassic hunters to Wild West-era military forts. And every Nevada state park writes a chapter in our ongoing tale.

Parque Estatal Berlin-Ichthyosaur

Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park delivers an impressive double whammy. It’s home to both a 20th-century ghost town and some of the best specimens of the ichthyosaur: Nevada’s state fossil. Wander through mining structures and buildings standing in a state of arrested decay, then head down the road to visit the dig site where one of the world’s largest concentrations of ichthyosaur fossils was unearthed.

Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historic Park

Six beehive-shaped kilns rise from the sagebrush, beckoning visitors to explore their origins—inside and out. Built in the 1870s to turn wood into charcoal for the nearby mines, these massive, incredibly preserved ovens are among the last of their kind in the West. After you’ve had your fill of history, hit up the rest of the park for excellent hiking, camping, and stargazing opportunities.

Fort Churchill State Historic Park

The ghostly adobe structures at Fort Churchill State Historic Park stand as a weathered reminder of the American West. Built in 1860 to protect emigrants and Pony Express riders, the military outpost was short-lived but left a lasting mark. Visitors can walk through preserved ruins, follow the trails along the Carson River, and stargaze under some truly stellar skies.

Remote Reservoirs

Think Nevada is just one big desert? Think again. Dive into these state parks where opportunities for on-the-water recreation abound.

Wild Horse State Recreation Area

Need a high-elevation escape into some gorgeous Nevada countryside? Wild Horse State Recreation Area offers year-round boating, camping, and angling (including ice fishing). Best of all, the surrounding area includes some of the state’s wildest (and most diverse) terrain, which is easily accessible via countless OHV trailheads.

Echo Canyon State Park

With its glittering waterfront, scenic hikes, and modern guest facilities, Echo Canyon State Park might be one of Nevada’s best-kept secrets. Wildlife lovers can spot deer and raptors in the surrounding meadows, and the canyon offers a riparian habitat flush with critters, cottonwoods, and cattails. Take the Ash Canyon Trail for a winding 2.5-mile loop along the valley rim that ends with a dramatic view.

Rye Patch State Recreation Area

Located along the Humboldt River, Rye Patch State Recreation Area is a veritable oasis. Visitors swim, boat, hike, and camp amid stunning desert vistas, and fishers capitalize on 72 miles of shoreline. Notably, the well-maintained amenities include a bit of history: Many trails, gazebos, and barbecue pits were constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression.

Discover Great Basin National Park

Set in eastern Nevada’s high desert, Great Basin National Park is a true hidden gem. One of the more remote and least visited national parks in the U.S., visitors are rewarded with unbelievable, crowd-free recreation.

Lehman Caves

By day, take the 12-mile Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive up to 10,000 feet and access multiple trails with varying levels of ease. Hike your way to ancient bristlecone pine forests, alpine lakes, and Nevada’s only glacier. If you’re up for a challenge, try summiting the state’s second highest peak, which towers above the park at more than 13,000 feet.

At night, it becomes crystal clear why “half the park is after dark.” Certified as a Dark Sky Park by DarkSky International, Great Basin National Park offers some of the best stargazing out there. The Milky Way is often visible to the naked eye on most summer nights, and the park hosts a multi-day astronomy festival each fall.

Lehman Caves is another must at Great Basin. Guided tours take you underground into an extraordinary cave system full of stalagmites, stalactites, and more than 300 shield formations. Reservations are required and tickets become available 30 days in advance, so plan accordingly to make Lehman Caves part of your national park experience.

Parque Nacional Death Valley

Nevada may only claim a sliver of Death Valley National Park, but it’s the perfect place to kick off your desert adventure. Beatty, Amargosa Valley, and Pahrump are all excellent gateways into Death Valley, while the Death Valley Rally takes you from Las Vegas through a world of extremes. No matter which way you get there, don’t miss the colors of Artists Palette, panoramic vistas at Zabriskie Point, and Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America.

This guy seems pretty friendly, but at one time ichthyosaurs ruled the ocean. Of course, that was between 100 million and 225 million years ago. Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park is where many of these ancient marine reptile fossils were discovered and is still a popular place to visit along #NevadaSilverTrails today! (📸: travelnevada)
While Nevada State Parks are currently closed, we can still share our memories and information for others so that they can visit once the parks open again. On our travels across the country, we have stopped at Kershaw-Ryan State Park a few times. The surrounding canyons and landscape are really impressive, and the views of the stars at night are awesome. The park itself is nestled into the canyon, and offers plenty of sites with full hookups. Camping is $25/night, and the sites are well spaced and offer covered shelters. The showers are particularly great, they are big and private and clean - they are also coin op so bring quarters. The little store in town doesn't like to supply quarters for whatever reason so you can wait for the visitor center to be open to get change. There are hiking trails behind the camping sites and plenty of room to walk the dogs. Watch out for spiky plants, and be prepared for plenty of wind.
