Short-Term Travel Alerts

Due to flash flooding damage caused by Hurricane Hilary in 2023:

  • Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, which includes Mt. Charleston, has now reopened most areas. In Lee Canyon (State Route 156), the Upper & Lower Bristlecone Trails/Trailheads, Lower Bristlecone Road, and Mack’s Canyon Road and dispersed camping area remain closed. In Kyle Canyon (State Route 157), the following trails/trailheads also remain closed: Cathedral Rock, Echo, Mary Jane, and Trail Canyons. On Deer Creek Road (State Route 158), Deer Creek Picnic Area remains closed as well. The latest updates will be provided through the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s website and Facebook page.
  • Road closures remain at Death Valley National Park, but many popular points of interest and hiking trails are accessible. Before you visit, get the latest updates and reopening projections from Death Valley National Park’s website and Facebook page.

Long-Term Travel Alerts

  • In October 2021, lake access at Cave Lake State Park temporarily closed to the public for construction to restore Cave Creek Dam. The lake was completely drained. While the campground is open, access to the lake will remain closed due to unsafe shoreline conditions and other safety concerns until the project is complete. Check here for updates.

Nevada just might have some of the best sunsets I’ve seen in quite a while. Still day dreaming of this one I witnessed along Highway 50, “the Loneliest Road in America” back in May. 😍

Teresa Lake, Great Basin national park.

This lovely alpine lake can be accessed by a short hike from the Alpine lakes trailhead. The lake, also referred to as a tarn, is surrounded by a grove of pine trees. The iconic Wheeler peak towers over the lake in this scene. The greenish tinge in the sky is from airglow.

The photo is a blend of the foreground shot at blue hour and the sky shot later in the night, from a different location in the park. The foreground is a stack of five photos, each shot at 24mm, f/8.0, ISO800, 6 second exposure. The sky was shot at 24 mm, f/2.8, ISO1250, 180 second exposure, tracked. Ten photos stacked.

Anyone else have a kid that would literally run into the water if you let them? 🥴💙
Have you ever visited a ghost town?

Nelson, site of the most successful gold mining boom in southern Nevada, housed Techatticup mine, famous for being one of the most lawless mining towns of its time, that even law enforcement avoided it completely.

A spontaneous stop turned out to be one of the most exciting places we visited in Nevada. This stunner, North American T-28B Trojan/Bu, is not an actual crashed plane but stored dismantled at the mine, making this ghost town 100x cooler ✈️
