“Special places deserve special protection.” That’s how Friends of Black Rock-High Rock perfectly encapsulates its mission to preserve and promote the Black Rock Desert-High Rock Canyon Emigrant Trails National Conservation Area. The organization—which runs a visitor center in Gerlach—offers everything from volunteer opportunities and special events to recommendations for almost every kind of outdoor recreation in the Black Rock-High Rock area.
With an emphasis on education, conservation, and responsible recreation, Friends of Black Rock-High Rock works to preserve the natural beauty and integrity of places like the Black Rock Desert and High Rock Canyon for future generations.

Fly Ranch Nature Walks
There’s only one way to experience the otherworldly beauty of Fly Geyser: through Friends of Black Rock-High Rock’s seasonal Fly Ranch Nature Walks. On these three-hour excursions, attendees get access to all kinds of wonders within Fly Ranch (owned by the non-profit Burning Man Project). This includes Burning Man art, lush wetlands, three geothermal features, and routine sightings of wild horses, coyotes, and jackrabbits.
Friends of Black Rock-High Rock also hosts site stewardship events, educational programs, guided hikes, and overnight campouts. Check their events calendar for the latest offerings, or consider becoming a volunteer or member to further support these unique and treasured landscapes.
