An outing on one of Nevada’s historic trains is always enchanting, but the thrills (and chills) are even more apparent when the leaves start falling and Halloween draws nearer. Whether you’re celebrating spooky season or eager for autumn adventures, the Silver State has no shortage of themed train rides sure to deliver delights and frights.
Travel Nevada Pro Tip
Each themed train ride has its own ticket prices and dates of operation. Get the most up-to-date information from each operator’s website.
Nevada Northern Railway
Get to Ely for a pair of seasonal excursions with Nevada Northern Railway. On the Pumpkin Patch Train, a steam-powered engine takes you on a scenic journey before ending at a pumpkin patch. Hop off the train, pick a pumpkin to take home, and capture memories in a fall-themed photo area. Pumpkin Patch Train rides happen on October 5 and 12, and tickets are $45 for adults, $38 for seniors, $20 for kids ages 4-12, and free for kids under 4 years old.
On Nevada Northern Railway’s Haunted Ghost Train, frights come alive around every bend. Don a costume and keep your eyes peeled for zombies, ghosts, aliens, and maybe even Big Foot alongside the tracks of the haunted train. This themed ride takes place October 18, 19, 25, and 26, and ticket prices are the same as the Pumpkin Patch Train.
Virginia & Truckee Railroad
Virginia City—considered one of the most haunted cities in Nevada—is home to the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. This historic depot offers two themed trains to choo-choo-choose from.
Described as “a hayride of steel pulled by an iron horse,” the Pumpkin Patch Train features true tales of the once-living, Comstock Lode-era men and women whose spirits still cling to the city. Find a favorite pumpkin when the train stops at the trackside patch. Catch a ride on this train October 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 26, and 27, with a spookier dusk train on October 18 at 5 p.m. Tickets range from $8-$25.
If you dare, board the Haunted Halloween Graveyard Train for a 40-minute trip to the Gold Hill Graveyard. Restless souls emerge in the night, and The Executioner will be waiting for you at the end. Dress warmly for the open-air train cars—and cross your fingers nothing climbs in with you. The Haunted Halloween Graveyard Train runs October 25, 26, and 31, and tickets range from $19-$26.
Nevada State Railroad Museum Boulder City
All aboard the Boulder City Halloween Express! Departing from the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City, this 90-minute adventure is all about fall family fun. Enjoy activities during the train ride, then disembark for a “Monster Mash” dance party, refreshments, and games. There’ll be a costume contest, too, so dress to impress. The Halloween Express happens on the evenings of October 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, and 26. Tickets are $30 for children and $35 for adults.
Nevada State Railroad Museum Carson City
Celebrate the season with two days of themed train rides and autumn-inspired activities at the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. Purchase a wristband at the Harvest Train Festival and take unlimited, 30-minute rides on two historic locomotives. A pumpkin patch, petting zoo (only on Saturday), food trucks, and carnival-style games add to the excitement. The Harvest Train Festival is October 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and October 20 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $20, museum members and kids ages 7-17 are $15, kids ages 4-6 are $5, and kids under 3 years old are free.
