I wish we had hot springs close to where we live. I think that was our favorite activity in Carson City: hike in the cold, then hit the hot springs... And then do it again the next day.⁣
⁣
What is something healing and healthy you're doing for yourself this week? Remember, if you don't take care of yourself, you won't be there to take care of others. ⁣
⁣
Something I'm going to do to take care of me this week is to make the time to take an outdoor nap. I know, that sounds ridiculous since it's nearly winter, but we live in Florida, so it's doable.⁣

The history of Stewart Indian School is complex and delicate but the new Cultural Center & Museum, on the schools campus tells the stories of the school's history and it's alumni beautifully. Visit them Mon-Fri 9a-5p. Learn more at stewartindianschool.com. #americanindian #history #stewartindianschool #visitcarsoncity

Just a few of the awesome historic homes we saw along the Kit Carson Trail in Carson City, NV. It was hot, but not unbearable because there were a lot of beautiful shade trees. The very large white house with the ionic pillars in photo 5, is the Governor’s Mansion, built in 1909. All the others were built in the 1860s and 1870s. You should definitely check out this historic neighborhood if you’re ever in the area. #kitcarsontrail #carsoncity #historiccarsoncity #westisbest #americanwest #americanfrontier #historicnevada #goldrushcountry #sierranevadas #westernhistory

There’s no better place to geek out on train history than the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Carson City. Not only does this place feature fully operational steam locomotives from 1875, but it’s also home to the McKeen Motor Car, one of only *three* National Historic Landmarks that moves. 🤓

Things to Do in Carson City

In Carson City, you’re never far away from state-shaping historical attractions, outdoor wonders, and surprising experiences. Take a peek at some of the top things to do in the state capital of Nevada:

  • Nevada State Capitol: Situated on a verdant campus where deer have been known to roam, our seat of government houses artwork, political history, and Battle Born Hall, a 2,000-square-foot museum dedicated to the people and events that shaped the Silver State.
  • Kit Carson Trail: Explore the city’s West Side Historic District via the 2.5-mile Kit Carson Trail, which winds its way past 19th-century homes and buildings (along with popular bistros and pubs). For extra insight, access the self-guided audio tour through your phone.
  • Nevada State Museum: Prepare to be endlessly fascinated by all the exhibits and stories housed within this former U.S. Mint: Sights range from prehistoric animals and American Indian artifacts to a Comstock silver collection and a working coin press from 1870.
  • Nevada State Railroad Museum: All aboard historic locomotives for seasonal and themed train rides, plus an extraordinary collection of railroad cars, equipment, and artifacts.
  • Kings Canyon Waterfall: This easily accessible hike is just minutes from downtown, and your reward at the end is a 25-foot waterfall.
  • Carson City Triathlon: Arguably more fun than the traditional version, this triathlon encourages athletes to experience three neighboring businesses in any order they choose: Soak in steamy waters at Carson Hot Springs, raise a glass at Shoe Tree Brewing Company, and dine on one of the most unique menus in the region at Sassafras Eclectic Food Joint.

Carson City History

When explorer John C. Fremont came to this verdant valley in the 1840s, he looked out over a land that the indigenous Washoe people had occupied for millennia. Fremont later named the local river after his scout, a famous trapper named Kit Carson.

About a decade later, influential settlers—tired of taking orders from Salt Lake City—purchased more than 800 acres of land with the goal of founding a new territorial capital. These efforts were greatly assisted by the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode, which brought more residents to the area in search of gold and silver riches, including Mark Twain himself.

The aptly nicknamed Silver State officially gained statehood on October 31, 1864, and Carson City was named the capital of Nevada.
