Enjoy Historic Downtown Boulder City

Boulder City’s historic downtown offers a quiet contrast to nearby Las Vegas. This time-capsule-like neighborhood boasts Art Deco architecture, popular restaurants, antique shops, and historic hotels and theaters—all of which give this Nevada city character all of its own. Built to house Hoover Dam workers, this community still carries its planned-town legacy in walkable streets, neatly preserved buildings, and an easygoing pace.

Take a self-guided art walk to spot more than 60 murals and sculptures throughout the district. Bronze statues stand near storefronts and street corners while colorful murals piece together Boulder City’s past. It’s one of the easiest ways to get a feel for Boulder City attractions before sitting down for a hearty meal or a well-earned slice of pie at a nearby café.

Outdoor Recreation

Boulder City sits at the doorstep to some of southern Nevada’s most iconic landscapes, making it a natural basecamp for lake days, river trips, and trail excursions of all stripes.

Of course, the star attraction is Hoover Dam: the landmark that literally put Boulder City on the map. Visitors can take guided tours of the dam’s inner workings or walk the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge for free top-down views of the dam and the Colorado River nearly 900 feet below.

Speaking of the Colorado River, the Black Canyon Water Trail beckons paddlers with guided kayaking and raft excursions that wind past dramatic canyon walls, hidden coves, hot springs, and emerald-green stretches. Day trips begin below Hoover Dam and end at Willow Beach, Arizona, while overnight outings stretch 30 miles down to Eldorado Canyon.

Beyond the dam, Lake Mead National Recreation Area offers boating, swimming, fishing, and camping across 1.5 million acres of the country’s first and largest national recreation area. Hike or bike to panoramic lake views along sections of the Historic Railroad Trail, which follows the route trains once used to haul materials to build Hoover Dam.

Bootleg Canyon cranks up the adrenaline factor with dozens of cross-country and downhill mountain bike trails that range from rocky and technical to fast and steep. Designed with intermediate and advanced riders in mind, this park tops many mountain bikers’ bucket lists.

Back in town, enjoy some rest and relaxation at Hemenway Park. This popular picnicking spot grants sweeping Lake Mead views and the opportunity to spot desert bighorn sheep grazing on the lawns, especially during late morning and afternoon.

Travel Nevada Adventure Center–Boulder City

Opening fall of 2026, the southern Nevada outpost of Travel Nevada Adventure Centers will help visitors plan their next outdoor adventure, whether that’s by kayak, mountain bike, or off-road rig.

The perfect starting point for any outdoor excursion, this conveniently located basecamp connects travelers with tours, gear rentals, expert guidance, responsible recreation tips, and resources for exploring Boulder City, Hoover Dam, Lake Mead, the Colorado River, and beyond.

Historic Attractions

Contemporary Boulder City history begins with Hoover Dam, but the community’s story doesn’t end there. The Boulder City-Hoover Dam Museum, located inside the historic Boulder Dam Hotel, shares the stories of the people who built the dam, the community that formed to support them, and the challenging conditions they worked through during the Great Depression.

Nevada State Railroad Museum—Boulder City

Rail history rolls through town at the Nevada State Railroad Museum—Boulder City, where visitors can see original locomotives, rolling stock, artifacts, and rotating exhibits tied to the Nevada Southern Railway. Scenic train rides and pedal-powered rail bikes add momentum to the museum experience.

For something a little more out there, head for a pair of neighboring Boulder City museums: Outpost 51 Alien Museum, which leans into Nevada’s extraterrestrial side, and Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum, where the art and history of special makeup effects are celebrated across props, masks, and famous Hollywood creatures.

Signature Events

Boulder City’s event calendar brings film, beer, barbecue, art, and small-town celebration to the edge of Lake Mead country.

Every February, the Dam Short Film Festival fills historic downtown with independent short films, filmmaker events, and screenings across styles and genres. Spring gets hopping with Boulder City Beerfest, where dozens of breweries, food trucks, vendors, and live music all flow together.

Boulder City Spring Jamboree brings out the town’s character with arts and crafts, antiques, entertainment, classic car shows, and family-friendly fun. Smoky flavors take over during the Best Dam Barbecue Challenge, where teams from around the country compete and visitors dig into their mouthwatering wares.

In October, Art in the Park turns Boulder City into one of the Southwest’s largest outdoor art gatherings, with hundreds of artists and makers providing a must-see spectacle across multiple locations.

Photo of the day: Kayaking the Black Canyon Water Trail by Boulder City. It was 106º F when we got off the water, and water temps are right around 50º F. Great way to cool off, going into that water, and we were also able to keep our water jugs cold while we camped there for 2 nights. There are tons of hot springs and hiking available, and the water is clear and gorgeous. There’s this fun, quirky little local shop down in Boulder City, NV called Aliens R Us at Flying Saucer Area 52.

If you are into anything alien related, this is the place for you. I’m such a sci fi geek, I just had to visit this place.

Be sure to check out my stories for the Alien Tequila that’s advertised on the sign and for more quirky pictures. 👽 🛸 .
