Nevada Museums

If you think Nevada’s wild now, you should’ve met it in its younger years. We’re talking Wild Western rowdiness, mafioso underworlds, atomic bomb testing, and far more. Lucky for us, wherever something intriguing happened, there’s usually now a great museum to show you how.

With cultural attractions and heritage centers tucked in all corners of the Silver State, Nevada speaks to history buffs with fascinating exhibits and stories in nearly every city and town. With impassioned docentsβ€”some of whom are direct descendants of Silver State forefathersβ€”and stories that never left the building they came from, it’s easy to get a close-up glimpse of Nevada history while you’re here.

Discover the Variety of Museums Nevada Has to Offer

From silver boom history covering the walls of the state’s oldest saloons, schoolhouses, and even jail cells in Virginia Cityβ€”an entire town that’s a National Historic Landmarkβ€”to natural history delights like an 11,000-year-old Columbian mammoth at the Carson City mint-turned Nevada State Museum, all the way to retired neon signs restored to their full buzzing glory at the Neon Museum, our past is vibrant, sometimes a little rowdy, and always far from average.

Whether you’re looking to culture it up at the Nevada Museum of Art, unravel lasting threads of the Silver State story at museums in Carson City and other Capital City history epicenters, or dive into interactive exhibits that the kidsβ€”and kids at heartβ€”won’t forget at museums in Las Vegas, Nevada is ready to teach you a thing or two.

Rhyolite is one of the best preserved ghost towns in the country. It was a short-lived mining success with 5,000 residents and all the modern conveniences of the early 1900s. But after just five years, the gold dried up and the miners moved on, leaving behind the dramatic empty buildings you can see today. Swipe for a glimpse of a true ghost town.

Also nearby is the Goldwell Open Air Museum, one of those classic Nevada road trip stops. Belgian Artist Albert Szukalaki made the place famous with his eerie ghostly sculptures, including this one called Ghost Rider.
Also, Hobbes never likes to pose for photos but for some reason he seemed at home here. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Have you ever road tripped through Nevada? Did you find anything especially interesting?

The Neon Sign Museum in Las Vegas was amazing! So cool to see so much history. They have over 200 signs!
From behind closed doors: Lost City Museum has a great collection of baskets. When school groups come, we ask students to find butterfly designs in the baskets. Besides butterflies, there are other cool shapes and designs. Which ones stand out to you? Photo credit #travelnevada https://t.co/6aKBJCbNkI

πŸ—Ί She went in search of quirk at Sparks Heritage Museum & Cultural Center and found Last Chance Joe! πŸ˜ƒ
.
(Last Chance Joe stands 32 feet tall. He was built in California, then was shipped to Nevada in 3 pieces by flatbed railcar. The railcar had to be routed through Oregon because of clearance concerns. ...
.
... After arriving in NV in 1958, Joe happily spent the next 55 years greeting visitors at the Nugget Casino. Then in 2014, the new owners of the casino decided that Joe’s services were no longer needed. The city of Sparks eventually adopted Joe and raised funds for a much needed restoration. ...
.
... Four years later, the fundraising and the makeover were complete and Joe now proudly stands in front of the Sparks Heritage Museum again greeting visitors.)
